S34 outdrive trim rams

Not sure where the leak is until the boat is lifted but there is contamination in the trim pump reservoir for the outdrive trim rams. If it's the trim rams and they need replacing what kind of job is it on a Sealine S34 to remove the inner pins. How much extra labour is it on top of a outdrive leg off service.

You have leaking rams , the oil is emulsified, you can reseal them if the end caps are in good condition without taking the Rams off some people do this as a cheap,option but it's never a long fix.
New Rams are the answer.
I never quote for this type of job as in past years I've ended up taking engine out to gain access to the trim pins, it's all down to how the boats been looked after. S34 isn't bad as the engine can be slid forward .

That sounds like a nightmare moving engines forward has got to be an expensive job. Sounds like it could escalate between a few hundreds pounds to thousands.
 
No it should only be a few hundred at most as the engines disconnect very easily when drives are off for service.
Plus the cost of new rams but hopefully you wont need to go down that route

You obviously never looked in that particular model of boats engine access.

The boat in question is one I'm looking to purchase and the survey is Monday. If as suspected and the rams need changing can you give me a rough idea of costs one for pins come out new rams replaced, another if it's engine moving to get pins out and new rams.
Both options would be at the same time as outdrive service
I just need a rough idea if it's still worth continuing with the sale and what negotiating I need to do with the sellers, pm if you wish.
Also what area do you work in we are hoping to be in or around Newark Notts

I agree with VP on this. Some years ago we looked at S34's but the tight engine access was a non-runner as I do all maintenance / servicing myself.

Compared to our Smeraldo 37, it's chalk and cheese.

Been there and dunnit in my case jack shaft bearing collapse
First its a lift out, remove engine covers and other stuff,disconnect batteries.
Hire the Hi-ab get somebody rummaging around to disconnect all the fuel lines/electrics,calorifier etc,undo all the engine mounts and move engine(s) backwards just enough to access rear of transom assembly, hoping nothing is seized or corroded.
You will of course not want to put everything back without replacing fork seals/ gaitors and checking gear box for water ingress ?

Wow I thought the S34 had a large engine bay especially with the kad32 engines. With that outlook you wouldn't even look at a fairline you wood need a jigsaw in there to get near the engines

I will admit that i'm a bit spoiled with engine access in the Smeraldo 37.

So much space (for the size of boat) that Trump wouldn't allow it for fear of hiding immigrants.
 
I'm suprised the pin access on the S34 is bad.
Access on the S28 with KAD32's was good enough for me to DIY, although I did need a very long flexible extension to undo the lock bolts.
If the pins are stuck, it's a different story,
 
The S34 could be supplied with AD41 KAD43 or KAD32 engines
If it has the 4 clylinder KAD32 there is space forwards of the engines.

F33 engine bay picture below. The engine bay hatch is much bigger on a F33 compared to the S34. Have you considered a F33? More boat and probably for less money. Better engine access.



Not sure about trim ram access other than it looks very tight. Is this not the same issue with 290dpe legs regardless of boat?


Seals for the rams are available. Worth a try I think (but accept Volvopaul wouldn't do it as there is a fair risk it will not work and if so the customer might complain).

We have looked at the F33 and we really like it but choosing the S34 came down in the end to finding a boat that looked like the owners had actually taken care of it. Too many boats on the market that have little history or are in need of cosmetic upgrades as well as the lottery of the service.
Although the engine bay hatch on the F33 is bigger I thought the actual access around the back of the engine was easier on the S34, just my opion from crawling around many boat engine bays although I appreciate Volvo Paul's input as I have no experience of actually having to work on them.
When looking on keypart or prior am I looking at 290dp or DPE drives for parts and service items (kad32) engines

I know exactly what you mean. I did the opposite - looked at S34's that were not cared for. My F33 had been standing ashore a while which brought its own issues but at least it was not abused.

The legs on a kad32 will be 290DPE (some late models might be some other model which is 290DP-SM )
 
On my boat (not a Sealine) I have the 290 SP-A Drive and had emulsified oil in the pump.
I had access to the lock nut and a small transom cut-out to remove the pins. Although I didn’t try too hard the Pins would not shift even with the Volvo Grease tool then a small homemade puller.
The removal of the Ram End Cap with a Pin Wrench also proved a non starter without damage.
From reading up this was a Transom Shield removal but happy to be corrected, so I tried a different tack.
Further testing there was no oil leakage from the rams and removing the blanking plug, I pressure tested the Ram and it all looked good. The problem turned out to be leakage of the cross over tube fittings. I am replacing the tubes and keeping fingers crossed!!

What I mean is it doesn't say 290dpe it gives option of 290dp or DPE. Novice question I know but I've got to start somewhere and I don't want to make schoolboy errors.
I've learnt loads off the prior website with the exploded diagrams working out what goes where and what all the different items are it's like boat ownership homework. Don't get me wrong I don't think I'm going to jump in there with a box of spanners and work like a trained professional but it's good to know how things work in case you get a problem while out and about
