Anyone hear the RYA cruising manager on radio 5 today? Trying to argue the case against £100 light charge for UK leisure boats. Without being personal about the man, he was a great deal less than slick and unable to deliver the 'soundbite' this sort of communication demands, sounding more like he was addressing a committee of the RYA. Come on, RYA... when you get your minute on national media you have to be terse and to the point, not apologetic.

I agree - it was an inadequate performance that failed to anticipate and prepare for the obvious questions that a reporter would ask. The RYA rep should have stuck with the strong cards - that most yotties make little use of Trinity House structures, and that the big ships are making money out of their activities and therefore have an income from which to pay a tax. Trying to argue on the basis of the relatively small number of yotties who couldn't afford 100 quid invites the reply that most of us obviously can afford it. The argument isn't about who can afford to pay - it is about who makes significant use of the service for which the charge is made. RYA - please try harder!
