ooh yeah, can picture it now. A load of stereo typical powerboaters and hooligan machine Ring/Phantom owners throwing empty beer bottles at the "The Man" who's giving a talk about boating and drinking. All from behind chickenwire!

Somehow I can't see it working. What we actually need is, we organise a "meeting" and invite someone from the RYA as a guest speaker. Someone who's brave enuough to talk about the finer points of motorboaters and the RYA and what they are, or will, do for us. Again the senario is to painful even to think about.

Would be interesting to hear what they think they are doing for your average stinkie. Not the same old chesnut though of "well we're lobbying your point of view, and red diesel and free of control and licencing. The RYa would secretly love to see compulsory licencing. Who would be in a plumb position to carry ouit the testing etc etc. More money for their coffers see. If not in the actual licence but in the training.

So when we going to have this meeting with the RYA then. Next spring sounds good, or are we just going round in circles. I know they#ve got a thing going in cowes if its not cancelled. We could gate crash that.......see told you it was a goood idea, why didn't you think of it!

I fink we should just keep our heads down, say nowt, do nown. Maybe they wil go away and forget all about us. As they mostly have now.
Now lets face it, if folk wanted to help, they'd do like the RLI. Free safety tests done by volunteers.
Every one would have a radio licence that would take about an hour and cost ten quid.
The RYA would have got groups of folk together around the country, to help each other learn and they would have a site like this one to discus the next meetings and offer advice.
They would not have blue blazers silly hats or special iletist blue flags.
In truth theres not alot the RYA can do for us and even less that we can do for the RYA. We dont have races, theres no advertising revenue in you lot tearing round the Solent, or me round plymouth.
They might as well invent the Royal Lawnmower Asosiation../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Bearing in mind they started in 1875, you must be one of the older forumites. Pleased to see the older generation taking so well to computers!

Other than fighting against light dues, excessive licensing, training, youth racing, national racing, jetskis, providing a legal support framework for clubs and individuals?

the truth is that they are perhaps biased towards competitive pursuits, and cruising comes second.

If you feel they dont represent your views then by the best solution is to get elected to the council, and influence from within. Getting elected is straightforward, all you need is more people to support you than the other candidates.

I see Colin Rennie at least once a week and those of you who were at my party will have met him here. Colin is the bigwig on the Motor Boat section and also Chairman of the ATYC. I bet he will be here at the party B1 is throwing here next February. You can bend his ear then.

Sorry, Brendan, perhaps I'm thick but what exactly is our beef with the RYA? I know they're a bit loaded towards the rag and stickie brigade but what is it they supposed to be doing for us that they are'nt doing and please dont say representing the motor boat fraternity because I dont know what that means

Far as I can see there doing nothing for us folk that dont want nothing doing. They could build a few pontoons round Plymouth, that would be handy. Free of course. Provide some cheap fuel in Salcolmbe. How about a free repair and winter service deal.

I'm more with you, than with the rest of the comments here so far. Boatchecks when all together, flare exercises with RNLI etc would be excellent ( done both of those with the club I belong to)

Anyone think that if 30 of us tun up at this meeting, it will have no effect on the RYA organisers?

Byron,

This is the sort of thing that makes general members believe that the RYA generally a closed community. I've been fortunate to be a member of one of your great parties, and hope to be so again, However, most members of the RYA aren't fortunate enough to be invited. So, if I meet him again, I'll bend his ear. However, what about the rest of the millions of RYA membership?

Re: Being elected? any volunteers. NM

Personally, I've been on too many committees to believe that just getting elected is going to change the culture of a large organisation.

Re: Being elected? any volunteers. NM

Not wishing to be a malcontent or a sniper, not at this stage anyhow,/forums/images/icons/wink.gif who actually gives or gave the RYA their certification mandate in the first place. Are they self regulating or does officialdom give their blessing to the organisation, to police training/qualifications, given to UK boaters.
