Now today I had the adult learning brochure through the door for evening classes and one was the RYA engine maintenance course..... now this has left me a little confused /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. As I only have outboards, attending a diesel inboard maintenance course is rather a waste of time, but this one, in one place calls itself the Diesel Engine Maintenance, and in another area the Diesel Engine/Outboard Maintenance. What does the RYA course cover? I have always been lead to believe it is just the diesels, but now I am not so sure. It would make sense to run a course on the maintenance and repairing of outboards... especially as I imagine that the majority of us have got one, and some, like myself, rely on them as the main engine on the boat.

Your thoughts & guidance on the course, as always, appreciated.

You should contact the centre offering the course for clarification. Maybe they will have the instructor in attendence at an enrollment evening. If so you will be able to get it direct from the horses mouth. After all it is the course you have seen advertised that you are interested in rather than what is in the RYA description of the courses in general.

RYA course covers just inboard diesels.
Was pretty much rubbish.

Did a course at Reading - 4 days & you did pretty much everything hands-on.
Now do my own services & learned some good to know tricks.

If interested, I've still got the contact details somewhere.

There is not an "official" RYA course on outboards! Only on diesel engines. Frankly, most modern outboards are now computer based and there is very little that the average boater can do to correct em!

For example, we run a Suzuki 200 - take the cover off and it's just a block with loads of wires and all electrics. We are scheduled for an CM change - has to be done by computer. All info must be downloaded and up loaded. You don't employ an mechanic anymore, you need an IT expert.!!!!!!!!!!!

Did the RYA diesel course at a canalboat centre in Marple, Cheshire. 1 day... did pretty much everything hands on, learned some good to know tricks and am about to do my own service - would have changed the cambelt, but decided to use an expert.

So I suppose it depends on who the instructor is I guess?

It looks like they have made an administrative error.... what you guys have said just confirms what I already thought, i.e. diesel inboards only. They quote this is the RYA course, so it must be this one.

My outboards are old enough that there is practically no wires/technical stuff in them. Does anyone know of anywhere that does run a course in outboard maintenance, albeit if it is not recognised as such?

I guess... did the RYA course in London - 12 to one engine!!
Started at nine, ended at four - with 2 hours for lunch!
No hands on.

Reading - mainly canal boat stuff - but one inboard diesel is pretty much like another. Four days - max 3 to one engine. One hour theory in he morning, one in the afternoon - everything hands on. Not just engine itself, electrics as well.

Only 4 on my course. 9am to 6.30pm. 1hr lunch. it was a bit rushed, but we covered the whole engine, and even packed a stern gland.

In fact, I am sure that the instructor said that the RYA specified a maximum of 6.

New forum?

As well as a forum dedicated to pubs & restaurants, maybe we should have one dedicated to sailing schools. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Of course, won't happen - sailing schools major IPC advertisers. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Come on Keith - prove me wrong! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: New forum?

The Reading course was excellent, they also do Boat Electrics. Tony Brooks has now left there, but can be contacted here: TB Training

Conditions of recogniiton for RYA diesel engine courses state:

1) A diesel engine (not necessarily in working order) must be available

2) There must be no more than six students to one engine

3) The minimum duration of the course is six hours
