I have 5 years inshore 36ft motor boat experience along Loch Ness & the Calendonian canal & want to get some training to go further. My local college is offering a course: RYA Day Skipper Certificate (Theory). It's under a Sailing section. Is this course suitable for future 50ft Motor Boat skippers.

I understand that some courses are offered online. The RYA search feature does not seem to be working. Can anyone recommend a company that offers a good range of online courses?

definitely a suitable course for a mobo skipper. Doing the theory course from a sailing perspective will give you insight into why sailors sometimes do the things they do and 90% of the course is the same for either a mobo or a sail boat.

My OH and I have both done the Day Skipper (Dazed Kipper:o ) Theory & Practical. We do have a sailboat but we have had an offer accepted on a MOBO and frankly, I still think the theory is as relevant. As Kashurst said, it will help you better understand interaction between sailboats and MOBOs and aside from that, navigation, markers etc are all what they are regardless.

Both the OH and I did our theory courses through online companies. We chose different ones because we wanted to see if there was a difference in quality. The biggest difference was the feedback. My OH got more feedback than I did, which I would have preferred. I will find out who he did his course through - my memory is not what it once was!!
