RYA cardboard membership cards

I have wondered, at what point do these things (mobile phones online banking, paying by cad or phone, not using cheques, online rather than paper newspapers etc ) become so widespread and the norm that the majority shouldn't be expected to pay for the old methods just for the sake of a few stick in the muds
That point was some time ago.

So why does nearly everyone use plastic cards as the main method of payment?

And don't give me the eco crap when the RYA is still sending out free largely irrelevant to me ad-stuffed glossy paper mags 4 times a year.
I wouldn't send you anything other than an email and maybe something to put in your Google Wallet. Certainly no glossy mags. I go for the paperless options whenever i get the chance. I also do not carry any credit or debit cards anymore, they are also in my Google Wallet.

But as suggested above, why not laminate it ?

>40% of the population have google pay or apple pay set up on their phone! In terms of volume of transaction, I think you are right the plastic card wins (for now) - but it's plastic because it lasts for several years of being pushed in and out of a machine, with a fairly fragile chip, contacts and antenna on it and its used on a daily basis by many people. I suspect only a small fraction of RYA members ever use their card and an even smaller fraction do so in an environment/frequency where cardboard doesn't work.

“Plastic” payment cards are very different - they do get much more use, but primarily the active parts are not the plastic cover but the embedded chip and wireless transmitters. Not feasible to make this complex multilayer item in paper.

And surely you can set paperless options to stop getting the paper magazine.
