RYA and the Great ICC rip off

I note that you said Private leisure craft, surely no one would hire a cruiser to someone without any qualifications?
This thread is about being able to hire a boat overseas, you don't need any qualifications in the uk for a private boat, but I would be surprised if you could charter a large mobo without any.
I know it was back in 2005 ish but I rented/hired a 30 odd footer from a firm in Banaher on the Shannon, no one asked for any qualls.
In fact it was kinda like 'She is the fourth one down the pontoon, here's the keys!'

I dont doubt that it is possible in Ireland, but back to the original OP, you need nowt in the UK, but you do overseas, so you pay for a bit of paper if you wish to hire in the sun:)

I have PB2, Coastal Skipper, VHF and VHF-DSC, Yachtmaster Shorebased (twice), owned my own 10m yacht for fifteen years and cruised extensively.

I never had problems charting abroad in the past, do I need an ICC now?

It depends, certainly a lot of charter companies in Greece are asking for an ICC now, I dont think the rules are set in stone, if you were intending chartering abroad it would be worth checking with the hire company beforehand, It is bettery to clarify the situation rather than spoiling your holiday.
There have been extensive discusions on scuttlebutt about this issue, plus reports from people who have actualy done it, I think Croata is another who asks for an ICC, or they will test you, and charge you.

No qualifications needed whatsoever to hire a 40, 50 or even a 60ft cruiser on the Shannon. It's non tidal. But you can charter on the coast here without any bits of paper.

Many are sold the concept of having 'bits of paper' but really it's just marketing to feed the training industry. Yes some need it, but most will never have to produce paper in these islands.
