While I am (very, very, slowly) in the process of buying a boat, I asked anold marine surveyor friend what he thought of the Superhawk 48.

Interesting comments included:-
1) Not S/seeker's easiest model to move in 2nd hand market..so offer cheap ( I did!!)
2) KAD44s generally more reliable than 42s....
3) Watch middle engine for excessive wear ( due load and lack of gearing) AND

rust on sump of mid engine if left with water in bilges for long time...question is anyone know of a devilish way to see the underside of these beasts in position...do Volvo engineers have a special trick???

Think only special tip V**v* engineers have, is dont look till oil falls out. Then charge bigger bill.

Ask SWMBO for her compact, do not let SWMBO know what you are going to do with it, she'll never guess anyway! Might get some funny looks though. Tape said compact to suitable stick, adjust mirror angle lower down side of engine and 'av a butchers under engine with mirror, a torch can be used to illuminate said area. We in the trade have them already made up like this on specialised gear, a set is available with mirror, magnet and grab.

Thanks.

Sounds good to me...although bloody expensive if/when she catches me...

I know i'm going to regret this... so what are the magnet and grab for?

Aaaargh! Obsession with rusty sumps syndrome!!

There were a few threads on Volvo sump corrosion, a few months back. About a hundred of them, in fact.

Didn't understand about middle engine wear/gearing. What did he mean? Is it cos owners drive the boat on middle engine only? I wd have thort people might drive it on the two outer engines only, with centre one switched off/trimmed up, but surely not centre engine only, not fast enuf?

You will not encounter these problems if you buy a Jeanneau 37 with in-mast reefing :-)

Oh well I'd better add S*****n then /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

..so will I be better off I buy Yanmar engines, cos the Yanmar engineers will look..??/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

No more sarcies or I'm telling Kim about you...and he'll accuse you of being childish if you don't get the speling in ur cignateur rite. ... or worse than that he may accuse you of being Welsh..

Re: Aaaargh! Obsession with rusty sumps syndrome!!

I must have missed that thread entirely, I'll go and have a search back for it. I assumed it to be a S/hawk specific issue due to the placing of the middle engine.

The middle engine 'lies' slightly lower (15inches) in the engine bay than the port/starboard engines.

Consequently , he advised me that this engine runs deeper and harder than the outers. He's the expert , not me! He said this COULD have been balanced through gearing but this has not been done. I understand he was referring to all 3 running at same time.

On the I'm allowed to look at Saily Boats /forums/images/icons/wink.gif aren't I?

Fact is that I love both but motors only way forward for me .... but never say never !!

You are of course right. But her real name is Rusty Stumps as she's from the adult amputee genre...

Magnet, Picking up nuts, bolts, spanners etc, that you drop down the engine bay/engine/sump/pump etc.
Grab, Picking up nuts, bolts, spanners etc, which the magnet wont get (stainless brass etc.)
Mirror, To find them in the first place and inspect sumps on S/Hawk middle engines etc.

Thanks

Doh....Obvious now ....Now which one of us is a skilled artisan who will take a pragmatic practical approach to getting things done, while the other sits on his backside doing nothing...looking for advise.
