Running Carb Dry?

Easy on ... no argument or disrespect ....

Scroll on down and the poster has qualified his original post and most have correctly guessed the point of his question ...

Re: Running Carb Dry? Now with little more info and explanation.

As hass beeen said here above, the issue now is that carbs are a different animal to what they were donkeys years ago. Jap carbs have tiny, tiny jets and emulisfier tubes all over the place. The point of running dry isn't for the float bowl, but to stop varnsih blocking all them 'oles...

Never run a 2T carb dry...The poor things have to run on little enough oil as it is, usually 100/1 mix (although most people double that up to 50/1)..If you run the carb dry not only is it running very lean but with no lubricant as well.

I have to admit I run my Yam 2hp dry at the end of the season tho'.

Bit of a popular misconception this 'running dry' thing IMHO.

Sorry Nick I'm going to disagree with you on that. The fuel mix contains sufficient oil to lubricate them when running at high revs and fully loaded. At idle there is more than enough oil to lubricate them for the few seconds that the engine takes to die. Perhaps it might be critical on engines with variable oil ratios but I dont think they are what we are taking about.

Anway there wont be any 2 strokes in a few years time apart from a few Seagulls which will be good for the rest of this century at least!

Hi Vic...Actually I'm sure it doesnt matter..in fact I remember back in the days when 2T engines were the 'weapon of choice' around the neighbourhood, one of the oil companies that supplied 2t oils did a test to see how long an engine would run on just the petrol if the oil was switched 'out'....the idea was to prove the clingability of these oils. I can't remember how long it ran for but it was suprisingly long time.

On older 2t engines ( on bikes) it was recomended to blip the thottle on long down hill stretches if using the engine braking...this of course was to introduce a bit of fresh oil around the surfaces.

In fact I pointed out the ' not running dry' issue just as people tend never to think about how the poor old 2t engine lubricates its self.

BTW I love 2 strokes..I'm going to the Goodwood festival of Speed for the 1st time this year ..hope to see plenty of screamers!

All best Nick
