POP over to classic boat and check this out p2 at the mo there is a link to the website explaining how to...FAQ etc., at the mo 27ltrs Diesel 3 ltrs cooking Oil to start working up to 50/50 in the end...could be good in some countries..I'm gonna try my first 3 litres this week.....

If you use old chip shop oil, it really needs extensive filtering, and the boat will smell like a fish shop after use.

Don't know about chip fat but when I was in Malaysia a friend used to run his Rover on 75% parafin, 25% petrol. The engine knocked a bit and didn't have the normal power but he ran it for years with no trouble. The best bit was the smell - like a jet going down the road.

Using new vegtable oil it smell like Dunkin- Donuts mmmmmmmmmmm

If anyone is serious about bio-diesel do a net serch, all the info on how to do it is readily available. The cost works out about 1/3 the price of standard diesel and in UK tax is only 15%. The process is relitively simple, ie easier than brewing beer!! but you do need a secure bit of space - dosnt look practical to do on board. If you just add oil to diesel the viscosity is all wrong and the glycarol levels are to high so although it will run it wont do the pump & injectors a power of good which gets expensive.

I 'have a friend' who mixes his diesel with cheap sunflower oil 50/50. Lidl seems Ok or has done for the last 20,000 miles (Peugeot 405) The down side is the time it takes to fill up using litre bottles !

READ THIS FIRST

Three VERY important things -

1. You can become a "self administered fuel supplier" and pay Gordon his tax on the veg oil you burn. Of all the things you might choose to do illegally in the UK crossing Her Majesties Customs and Excise Department is the last thing any sane person will do! I have a friend who burns new veg oil 50/50 and does just this but it's not the best solution.

2. The best solution is to filter used cooking oil, (not animal fat by the way), and then burn. It's much cheaper than new stuff, bangs just as well, and makes the prospect a useful one. You've still gotta pay Gordon BTW but ecologicaly it's good because you're using a waste product that's aldready worked once.

3. A modest investment in a second fuel tank to hold real diesel and a heater to pre-heat your oil so it sprays the same as diesel, start on the commercial stuff and then switch over, and switch back just before stopping, this works well and requires no bio-diesel manufacture, which is a messy polluting dirty business for the d-i-y man. are there any places in the UK that readily sell biodiesel? in the rural areas of australia they sell it for farm usage... it is by no means unusual.

On the A64 opposite the Highwayman cafe there is a farm that sells biodiesel.

I use petrol so only noticed one day whilst eating my bacon butty and watching VOSA and the police turf a load of people out of a 4x4 and taking it away for no tax.

No, the 4x4 was blocking the entrance to the Highwayman car park opposite the biodiesel place. Nowt to do with the fuel it was just a convenient place for VOSA and plod to stop untaxed/uninsured vehicles - its nice to see them being taken away these days rather than the drivers just getting a warning.

I've seen a few people at Costco buying pallets of cooking oil in 25ltr drums so maybe burning alternatives is more popular then thought?

I'm sure I read somewhere that you have to own up to C&E and pay them tax on the cooking oil you put in your tank? Would they still want a cut for boat use?

I'm using 50/50 mix in my Pajero filtered from local chip shops so please dont tell Customs and Excise.

Hi, I agree that crossing the HM govenment is a bad idea. So putting chip oil into a road vehicle seems a bad idea. As most people use red diesel does that make boat use OK? There may be problems with cost effectivness.

Currently you can register with C&E as a fuel producer and pay the tax on any veg oil you burn. The tax is reduced by 20p per litre. You just send them a check each month for the amount you use. Done on a trust basis!!
