Rumbling coming from prop area when in gear

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

Yes, it only happens when in gear - and is the same in both forward and reverse gears.

I'll run it a little more to see if it's fouling, but it really does sound horrible.

My dad is just down at my boat with me at the moment and has brought his waterproof video camera with him, I'm going to give it a shot and see if I can see anything. I would rather not go in the water.

This is the underwater profile/prop:

There is a dark line at the top of your P bracket. I really hope it isn't a crack.

That is a very pink looking prop. Is it really that pink in real life?

If so , check for missing bits of blade. otherwise if all was ok before the 2 mths without use, hopefully it wont be too serious, and as others say, weed, or barnacles.

Yes, I wanted it pink to match my hoodie.

...

No, not really - well, yes, it is that pink in real life, because it was previously anti-fouled red, and we cleaned it up with a wire brush, so now it's faded pink. Well, that was taken 2 years ago, so now it's probably green and covered in growth.

Pretty sure it's not a crack on the P-bracket, can't imagine we'd have ignored that!

A happy update!

I've had her out in the yard for the past week, a lot of hard work with the help of my dad and a friend.

She needed a new cutless bearing, which I got the local marine engineers to do, and this has cured the rumbling.

The line at the top of the p-bracket isn't a crack. It's a line in the antifouling, which has now been rubbed back. The p-bracket was properly sealed, and to future-proof it, we glassed over it some more, sanded it all back and anti-fouled it; it looks great.

The prop was pink because of the old faded red antifoul.

Good news all round :)

I couldn't help laughing at the idea of explaining to a security guard at 2am - "I was just trying on my snorkelling gear and posing for the camera with my tool belt when I slipped..."

Popped down to the boat on Sunday to get it ready for coming out. Ran the engine prior to changing the oil and popped it in gear for a laugh. The noise was fairly horrific. Half a jungle of weed appeared in the water. Lots of critters presumably homeless. The log came out with an inch and a half plug of sea life.
I suspect the shaft will be calcified. And the bearing will need changing because of it.

Early this last season my Volvo 3 blade folder was noisy in neutral and under slow revs when in gear. Its on a saildrive. Dried out for a thorough examination. No fouling or other damage. Anode not loose. In the end I put it down to rattle from wear in the prop teeth, possibly due to over zealous cleaning and polishing. The noise dissappeared once it fouled up a little!

Yeah, I'd like to see what's under the water but you're not allowed to dive in the marina (even commercial ones) and I don't fancy "falling in". How about a waterproof video camera? That might work.

It's been two months since I last went out for a sail, thus turned the prop with the engine/gearbox. (I know that I need to do this much more regularly, and will do now I have the new starter motor fitted - well, need to sort this rumbling out now too.)

Almost certainly shaft is moving eliptically in the cutless bearing. When you haul out and can get to the cutless bearing and test for shaft movement I would lay odds you will feel too much play of shaft within the bearing.
