There's a massive difference between approaching to come alongside and doing all that you describe if you had a 'house for sale' board - I repeat again, we weren't even given the chance to ask or be courteous. Anyway, I will continue to be extremely courteous with everyone I come into contact with on the water and get my rewards in heaven!!

I fully understand the rationale for securing in that manner, and if your rafts are reasonably sized then there wouldnt be a problem - however, I have seen rafts of 9 boats all secured bows in and the end result is extremly unseamanlike. If I was the inner boat with a raft like that outside me, I would leave.

probably a new rule to add the the rafting etiquette rule book, is that it is courteous not to go alongside boats on private moorings

another rule might be that it is polite to make appts to view boats, in the same way that you would to view a house.

I think it is you that is partially missing the point /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif. As I pointed out in my previous post, and you were so kind as to agree in your reply /forums/images/icons/wink.gif, the major point is the adequacy and placement of the fenders. A Mobo going alongside a raggie has to get the placement of the fenders absolutely right to avoid damage caused by the fact that the sides of the mobo tend to be MUCH higher than the raggie, also as they come alongside, the bows of all the mobos I have seen tend to be somewhat canted out, and it is this which can catch the stanchions if the mobo driver tries to park a bit too close. It doesnt worry me so much cause my boat's shape is more conducive to mobo , and I tend to hang out big round fenders anyway./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

My apologies, however I thought your post said that it was so the crew could step from bow to bow - let me just check now -- ah ha, yes that is indeed what you said, so now you know that there may be other less selfish reasons.

By the way, I am told (we don't have to raft up much out here so can't speak from personal experience on the following point) that particularly undesirable in a raft up are boats with a stepped sheerline. The high part wrecks your stanchions and the low part wrecks the paint on your topsides - perhaps you could comment?

I'm sorry chap's (and chapess's) My theory is a lot simpler, it's just plain, open jealousy!! Let's be honest, the whole sailing thing's a pain in the a.se. I've done both and I know which is more relaxing, and let's be honest, why do we take to the water in the first place???? Raggies are stuck in the bl..dy realms of the Mary Rose still. Celestial navigation, what's that all about when you've got GPS (and back up systems). How many airlines do you know still carry sextant's and star charts?? You've only got to look at the recent sales figures, motorboats are outselling sailers at an alarming rate. How long before all those that currently swear by the cloth are converts?

I agree with you, I am a Mobo man, but dont understand why there is this thing against sailor types,
Neither do I have anything against people who crosswords or walk for fun. I dont fancy the pastimes myself, but dont give a sh.t if others enjoy them.
I tried sailing and would have another go i see it as the difference between a hobby and a sport - no reason for antipithy

IMHO we all have a common love of the sea, that includes fishing boats, big ships, and even the harbourmaster collecting the money. Why therefore should we not enjoy, chill out, smell the sea air and leave that kind of stress for the office.

If it was Part 1 Registered you couldn't have since we grabbed Heartbeat in 1987 and kept it when we changed boats. It was surprisingly unique until the TV series came out, despite Buddy Holly fans, actually comes from the USA phrase doing something 'in a Heartbeat', SWMBO is from that side of the pond. Now there are lots of copycats, one of which was ticked off for bad VHF procedure and another (or the same) who is on the rogues board for having skipped without paying from Hayles in Yarmouth IOW!

When the EU takes a proper hold and duty prices are slapped on to deisel, then watch a turn around in boat sales. When legislation is brought into line with Europe and power boaters have to have licences and pay yearly tax watch the change.

When you want to go a little further than around the island and back to your berth start thinking about a rag on a stick.

It is not so much oldy worldy but a great invention like the wheel, if it aint broke don't fix it. When I sail I hear power boats that are over my horizon, how relaxing when you have to shout at the person next to you to be heard.

But, it is your choice, sailing is mine, I enjoy relaxing at weekends and getting away from the noise of life, you choose to bomb around at full whack, good for you, let us be, it is my choice after all.

I came into boating from flying. All pilot's, irrespective of type, hold a common bond, what a shame this doesn't follow in the league of seafairers!! Every person that goes to sea (safely) deserves respect, irrespective be it with sails or Volvo's. Both disciplines require different skills which should be equally respected by both parties. I'd be happy to berth a 50' sailer in any situation, how many sailers would say that of my 48' motorboat in a howling crosswind? Likewise I wouldn't be too happy mixing it in a sailing boat with the channel Island's tides.
I have to say, during the past twelve months, every incident I've seen has involved sailing boats. Three collisions, one M.O.B. and two out of control yachts bouncing off other boats in Marina's. Obviously there are some idiot's in motorboats as well, I would, however suggest , most of the problems are caused by "dayboats" and not the larger vessels.
When I travel further than "around the Island" I don't think about a "Rag on a stick" only where my next fuel up-lift (and nice restaurant) will be.

It was a pretty big mobo that ran full tilt into Portland Harbour breakwater, big enough for them to be charged for not having mandatory gear on board. Local word was they were drunk as skunks. Oh and what was it that just hit the buoy off the Needles and sank?
