The blue ketch looks to be in the worst position but couldn't really see any significant damage to her (but that could just be at this range). Might also be some pontoon rash on the starboard side of the white yacht. Could have been a lot worse I suspect. Almost looks like they were aiming for the gap between pontoons.

I found Teignmouth hard enough what with the tidal flows, bar etc without unusually incompetent skipper on large boats coming through visitors moorings. What were they thinking of? Why the apparent calm acceptance from the bow lookout when he or she should have been raising an alarm?

back in the early 70s, a ship lost control when leaving the quay next to Essex marina on the Crouch above Burnham. It was caught sideways & was being carried sideways down towards the yacht moorings.
Seeing the arising calamity, Tucker Browns sent their 2 launches to just cast adrift the yachts in its path.
About 20 yachts ended up adrift in the river. However, none received serious damage & a tug stopped the ship after it ran over a lot of the moorings.
Tucker Browns, along with assistance from Priors & some owners with tenders, then spent ages collecting wayward yachts & putting them back. Some had to go on temporary moorings. Took some time & some went quite a long way. Quick action from the yard saved a lot of yachts. I often wonder if yards of today would do that.

Wonder if it hada bowthruster?
pretty sure it has with the markings on the bow and the way the boats in the middle moved around when he pivoted away from the pontoon towards the end. Would be very difficult to berth that boat alongside the jetyy without thrusters. it is thrusters that make it possible for that sort of coaster to run with minimal crew and ports like this to operate with maybe only 2 staff and no tug.

If a Captain is a regular visitor to a particular port he may be allowed to dispense with a pilot.
Pilotage exemption certificates are issued at the discretion of the port authority, usually after a certain number of supervised arrivals&departures then reissued annually without further supervision provided a minimum number of visits occur. In this case maybe some supervision is needed? :ROFLMAO: It's not like the departure from the navigable channel was slight, nor was the speed of approach.

The days of lookouts on the bow are long gone. The man on the bow is there to handle lines, operate the windlass and, in this case, speculate who the new skipper will be ?

Humm , yes one of the main threats to boats mooring in the approach areas to the Ship Berths ; as these large Ships need to actually turn to Port then travel a short distance in order to berth up ok ; when assisted by a TUG the tugs enable this manouver to be done well ; so cannot understand why another Large Ship was given the OK to enter these restrcted waters whilst another Ship was already requiring the assistance of the Pilot / Tug Boat ; maybe our local Papers , Internet will provide the answers ? maybe not !

Good job that it appears to be very little wind to influence the outcome , plus guess it ws near High Tide so that helped a LOT
