Rudder bearings

I'm afraid I'm fairly ignorant as to shape, position and material of rudder bearings. Don't seem to have any free play so will leave well alone but there is a plastic collar sitting on top of the rudder and seems fairly loose. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be part of the top bearing or just a spacer? It's a Sadler 32, BTW

IMVHO this is just a 'spacer/washer' and is meant to be loose. I have the same type of thing on my Sigma 362. Many years ago had a Sadler 32, but I have no idea whether she anything similar to yours, or not. Too long ago!!!

The weight of the rudder is acting downwards, so it is supported either by the top bearing or a skeg. That washer, same as on my 34, will only be active if there is load acting upwards, e.g. If the boat dries out. Otherwise it doesn't seem to do anything.

My rudder floats so the spacer on my boat does have a function when afloat.

its a loose spacer so when the rudder rises it will not impinge on the hull.
