Rudder bearings???

Does the presence of grease deposits on the top edge of the rudder suggest that I should be removing the rudder and inspecting (groan). What is likely to be the prob? Can I leave it or will I regret it?

John, you haven't stated whether the rudder bearing is a lubricated bronze bush or needle/roller bearings?
In any event, this should be done from time to time to ensure that any seals need to be replaced and to remove buildup of old grease. If have just purchased the boat sooner than later is adviseable.
Depending on design, you may have a stuffing box which may also need re-packing.
