Rubbish Postings

I agree with you entirely within the subject matters you mention in your post. Its the absurd ones that add to the slowing down and blocking up the forum that i was refering too.

This forum is a tremendous source of experience, good advice and I am very grateful for all those contributors who have helped me in the past and greatly assisted my learning curve. I think it would be such a pity if the number of non relevant posts dissuades others from also benifiting.

I don't like censorship but we all know the few authors of most of the rubbish posts and hopefully it may influence them a tiny little bit as I am aware that if they want to they can be very interesting and informative.

However now I have discovered the "Ignore this user" button its adds interest as on this thread I already have a number of responses that only display " You are ignoring this user". Its only when I look at others responses that I get the indication of what they may have said.

claymore's comments are very well stated - most unlike him, which actually proves his point. The forum provides entertainment, friendship, frustration and useful information all in abundance.

Sailfree, your response is equally eloquent and cleanly closes the debate, IMO.

Its just a shame that some other snakey people felt the need to get personal, yet again, along the way.

I liked the poem you posted on the dogs and sharks thread:

GOD MADE THE MOUNTAINS
GOD MADE THE SKIES

GOD MADE THE PEOPLE;
GOD KNOWS WHY

HE FIXED UP THE PLANET AS BEST AS HE COULD
AND IN COME THE PEOPLE AND GUMMED IT UP GOOD

I agree. Life could be so much nicer without people.

Sorry to go on....

I agree with everybody.... theoretically.
<ul type="square">[*]Yes, you can switch peeps off ( I never have, as even the most disagreeable or facile poster will drop a little gem some time).
[*]Yes, you can ignore threads which look like they are just some friends having a laugh (usually pretty dumb humour, or worse, scottish...)
[*]Yes, the speed of the server response is not determined by the number of posts in just one of the forums.
[/list]
But, surely Sailfree has identified the problem as wheat and chaff. Sorting is a pain, it takes time to find a thread is just pals swapping jokes, and if you are on the end of a 56K dialup link.... think about it.

And, for me worst of all, is that that lively 'fun' thread can swamp things of sailing interest. The posting re Voiles et Voiliers article was interesting (or, at least, I thought so /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif) but rather quickly vanished on SB, due to 'other' more fast-moving, but non-saily, threads. I noticed that 48 visitors had read it, just before it vanished off the first page of the index for me. I never normally look beyond the first page, so probly some others like me,and would thus loose sight of it.

In other words, the practical constraints of the forum, speed of access, visibility, etc etc are what determine the forums usability. I think I am now rambling, so will shut up. Rant over. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Haven't we heard this before?

So, just before you disappear into oblivion please explain your new monicker, or should we try to guess?
