I am considering what wood to use for rubbing strips on my 18ft mahogany hull. My books recommend elm or sycamore, but neither of these seem to be easily available. Any suggestions, anyone?
I was once told Green hart was the perfect wood for this strong and resistant to scraping along side lock walls.
Apparently as well as being used for the "Hog" it is also used for lock gates. It is so heavy it sinks and is rot resistant.
Greenheart, Just dont get a skelf (splinter) or it will poison your finger in an instant.
Plenty of good elm up here in Scotland speak with Jim at Fairlie Sawmill
Yes that is something I had forgotten to mention.
My recollection comes from my MN days when the ships chippy would fashion fenders out of baulks of timber with an adz and I recall him going on about Greenhart and it's values at some length and he did mention don't get a splinter from it as it will go septic.
I assume these are rubbing strakes attached to the sheerplank, if so they are probably also decorative. Elm is not the best above the waterline, sycamore a bit posh, use iroko or afromosia or if you like varnish, mahogany provided you don't make a habit of using just for protection instead of fenders.
