What is the current status of the Club?

Has it turned the corner, quietly dying, or somewhere in between?
I hung in for ages but have resigned now.

I love Gins, but every time I went there it was shut. They kept varying the opening times. Things like that needs consistency. One time I checked the website before I went. Lunch served until 3. I was turned away at 2 because they “had to clear up“. The restaurant is open until 3 so you can eat the food you’ve bought they said.

That was the final straw for me.

Are you a paid up member , it can be worth it .
Who is that addressed to?
I was but I resigned.
If you take part in their racing it may be worth it, but otherwise I can’t see why it’s worth it at all.
I joined for their 2 clubhouses and what was at one point in OV great food. That fell off a cliff too.

I'm not a member. But I did book a dinner there 18 months ago, for 50 people, the woman that runs it was a dragon. I reckon they would do well to get shot of her and put someone front of house that knows how to deliver customer service.

If as a club it is outed and run by members , and shuts through lack of trade , then it made be sold and the profits shared amongst the members.

A number of of my family were members of the RAC when they sold the breakdown operation, a nice little windfall. I had however thought that you had some idea why being a member of an ongoing RSYC might be worthwhile.

I am very happy to have been member of RSYC For 3 years. I never used the Southampton club house so I don’t miss it.

There is a new manager at Gins called Lauren and she (and her team) are delightful. Gins has had some light renovation and looks great and the Sunday carvery roast is epic.

we could do with some younger members though!

We joined as temporary members for a year. We were looking forward to frequenting the OV clubhouse and meeting other like-minded boatie folk. Sadly, the OV Clubhouse closed just after we joined, and at any events we frequented we felt sooo much younger than the rest of the membership (we’re in our 50s). Most people were friendly, and Gins was lovely, but we just didn’t feel like we fit in.
We really wanted the club to work for us but it just didn’t meet our expectations.

It will depend on its constitution & RYA Affiliation, as to what happens to assets

That was exactly our experience, in fact so exactly it's spooky, probably a year before you. Did you try anywhere else afterwards?

That is a real shame.

You are 100% correct. People now have such limited leisure time, and no club can afford to muck them around like that.

The practice you described is entirely unacceptable in any private club. Members are not fungible customers, and the benefits they enjoy (precious few at Southampton, apparently) should never be sacrificed on the alter of staff convenience.

What is the Rear Commodore House thinking?!
