Royal Clarence Marina Gosport

Went there about three years ago.
Pleasant staff.
Away from the crowd.
Temporary "facilities" were good but rather a long walk away. Hopefully new ones now nearer.
Long walk into Gosport to find a decent pub.

Were here for the winter along with 4 other Liveaboards, 3 of whom also contribute to this site.
We really enjoy it here. Reasonably quiet being on the outside of the town, at least it is now that the Clippers have sodded off.
The staff are excellent and very helpful.
The facilities are a bit basic but perfectly serviceable. New facilities are in the planning but not built yet. Plenty of parking in Cooperage Green.
The town centre is a 5 min walk away. The Clarence is a real ale house 2 mins walk .

Anything else you would like to know or I can help you with ?

our marina has a tie-up via "Transmanche" we were thinking of calling in nxt year

Anybody there? Opinions?
Spent a month there this season.

More sheltered than the old C&N place but not as good as upper creek Haslar.

Long dismal walk to the showers.

Old fashioned boarding school type shower facilities, but well scrubbed.

Good staff with a flexible approach to adhoc 1-3 month stays.

Not staffed 24 hours a day, and so coupled with derelict shore-side and poor lighting, the whole place feels creepy at night.

Annual pricing does not reflect the downsides but otherwise best marina deal for medium length stays.

There are a few of us nearby too, perhaps an excuse for a meet up for a pie and a pint.

Can't recommend a pub, but do not go near the pump room (cafe in the car park) hot bacon bagettes dripping with thick tomato sauce before departing and big sticky toffee and chocolate cakes afterwards will be ruinous :D

Pete

Pray tell, did you find one, and what's it called
We walked to the pub near the ferry. Don't remember what it is called. Total distance from our berth in the marina 0.82 miles so took rather longer than 5 mins esp pushing the skipper in his wheel chair!
The nearer pub was showing some "important" football match on large screens in all the bars so walked on past!

Perfectly satisfactory pub. Good food IIRC. Mid week so not at all busy.

Been there once a year for the last 4 years. Seems good value as marinas go. Showers always clean and functional. Micro Brewery down the road for those tasty takeaways.

Admittedly there is a fair bit of walking to do but a little exercise never hurt anyone although not so clever if its raining.

There are pubs in the vicinity but never tried them.

Don't know what it's like these days, but walk the other way over the new bridge towards what was Priddy's Hard Armanent Depot and try the Jolly Roger in Hardway or the Windsor Castle (was Gales Ales) I grew up inHardway and have been back occasionally in the last few years.
But then I used Haslar and C&N !! oh yes Hardway Sailing Club pontoon for a tenner a night.

Was there for a few years. Helpful staff, small marina feel and service, v sheltered in comparison.
Biggest plus, the fishing off the back of the boat in bass season is excellent. Biggest minus, the showers are those small electric ones that are a bit feeble, although clean. They are also a long walk from the boat. Best showers, probably in the solent, Gosport marina - although that has other issues....

for over night it's great, friendly staff and cheap. and very quite behind the island (no movement at all)... and the tapas in the pump house is great!

however their are still issues if you want a permanant mooring..... constant building work... long walk to car park and showers..... clipper boats are a pain when they are in... your'e never get a shower and they are left in a mess.... Lack of 24h security, both marina and open carpark.

Go next door to premier get the electricity thrown in and 24 hour security, short walk to the boat / town and free nights in their other marina's. it works out to be about the same price as RC.

just my 2p's worth. however it may of changed.

No real other issues with Gosport that I can think of, but not really spent that much time there with my own boat - I used to teach from there though and it all seemed ok.
If you are staying there a while, then the showers alone would do it for me I'm afraid...

Some of it has. There are now 24Hr security cameras. Building work is still going on but not at the pace it was due to the recession. The walk to the showers & car park hasn't changed..............about 150 yds.............hardly a long walk. Yes I agree about the Clipper people. They seemed to have little consideration for anyone else and some of them were very rude & arrogant.

BTW The Endeavour Chandlers at the entrance to Premier has recently closed down.

Hello!

I currently liveaboard in Royal Clarence with my partner James, who also happens to be the Senior Dockmaster in the marina.

The best three things about the marina are, in my opinion:
- Small community feel; there's always a familiar face and helpful hand around. It's not a big, faceless, chain marina; it's small, friendly and personal
- It's the most sheltered marina I've ever been in. Trips to Cowes make us realise how much we take this for granted!
- The staff

To some of your concerns:
- To the best of my deductions, you are all blokes. I am a girl and have long, thick, dreaded hair (yes, I wash it). I use the showers. They are not the most powerful but they are fine; very clean and always warm - I've never had that awful cold shock after stepping out of the shower. Free hairdryers. Yes they're a bit of a walk, but it's good to see the outside world every once in a while. More opportunity to exchange greetings with our fellow bertholders.
- You can't even see the building work at the moment. It has no effect on my daily life
- CCTV cameras, 24hr on-call dockmasters (I'd know!), very good relationship with local beat police constables. I'm quite happy to walk around by myself in the dark - don't find it at all creepy; in fact beautiful views across the harbour of the naval base and Spinnaker tower
- Everything in walking distance: Morrisons, town centre, pubs. Best gastropub for food is The Jolly Roger, about a 10-15min walk up the harbour towards Hardway. Beautiful walk, especially the other night on fireworks night... The one by the ferry that VicS mentioned is the Castle Tavern, also does good food and very popular with OnDeck people from Premier. Nice pub for a drink is the Clarence Tavern, turn left out of the (big, free) marina car park, cross at the lights at the end of the road, look left... see it now?
- Yup, the Clipper lot this year were the worst yet. They're gone now for a good while though

I, like Sandy, am more than happy to help answer any other queries. We're proud of our marina.

jelly :-)
