Route du rhum. The start tomorrow at 2 pm French time.

The app seems to work alright - if you don't mind everything being in French.

I had a look on board GDF Suez (currently leading) after they arrived, not a lot of much down below. The minimum boat limit was 4500, she was 4503, they were in the process of drying/dehumidifying all the moisture out.

The plan hatched between Rogues and his boat manager was for his boat manager to do as little as possible, sit around on deck and be seen sitting around doing nothing, because that's how well prepared they are. And because they were well prepared they could afford to play a few mind games with the competition! :0)

Some posts about it on my blog with videos:

Interesting Sailboats: AND HERE THEY GO AT FULL SPEED POINTING TO STORMY SEAS: BEAUTIFUL IMAGES

Interesting Sailboats: ROUTE DU RHUM THE WORLD'S BIGGEST SAIL RACE?

The multihulls are faster and they had a big advantage on the first hours but now they are sailing upwind and some monos overtake some multis. Bad weather on the way. Not so fun for them but very interesting for us LOL

Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe

It is also very interesting to see if the 50ft trimarans can beat the Open 60. If the race is hard with bad weather it is not clear and many Open 60 are faster than most 50class Multi. Of course the big trimarans are faster but they are bigger than the Monohulls.

What are the spars sticking out either side of R K-J's boat? Are they part of the rigging, or is it where he parks his spi poles, or what?
Grey Power has a spreaderless rig to allow the mast to be rotated. The booms act to spread the standing rigging and give the rig width in place of conventional spreaders, allowing the bare spar to be rotated within the rigging.

Present positions: 1 Snalbo 4 speed 30.4 kn, 2 Maxi Solo BP7 speed 20.1 kn. 3 Gitana XV speed 15 kn. neck in neck with PDB 2 speed 15.9 kn.

One of the more interesting things is the great race that Lalou and Gabart are making. Lalou on the Multi class50 is making equal game with the big boys in the big Maxi multihulls and Gabart that is well ahead of the other Open 60's ahead of almost all Multi 50 amd even ahead of a Maxi multihull and close to others. A smaller Monohull going almost at the rhythm of much bigger multihulls, that's what I call great sailing:)

What do "4500" and "4503" measure?

Latest news... One boat struck a container ship. One helicopter rescue from an upturned hull. A third is drifting, awaiting a tow.

As another great Gaul once said, "These racers are crazy, toc, toc, toc."

Thomas Coville, Sodebo, was hit by a freighter taking off the starboard hull back as far as the beam. He is making his way to Roscoff. Sodebo is the former Geronimo of Ollivier de Kersauson, rebuilt and relaunched in May.

Four other boats have also made into Roscoff.

Downloaded the Route du Rhum for iPhone, App store states English French and Spanish but can't find anything on app to change to English ?

If 4500 was the MINImum, then they would have been OK at 4503. Pretty damned neat, planning, in fact.

Yes, there's nothing to stop them setting off with a boat that weighs 4503kg. But they'll not want to carry any more weight than absolutely necessary so by removing 3kg of moisture from the inside of the boat they hope to gain any advantage that gives them however small. These are the limits that these guys race to and is part of the reason the race is always such a demolition derby.

Yup it was KG, sorry (I was typing in the ads during Homeland) and yep he was 3KG over the minimum

The boat would have been weighed and that weight recorded, then everything added or removed is recorded and weighed. Replacing certain items mean the whole boat has to be reweighed. How much moisture was on board when she was weighed last time of course is an unknown.

They were looking where weight could be saved - as part of the rules all boats have to carry a book of lights (a physical book not an Ebook), it's a thick book with lots of adverts in it. The boat managers job the next day was to go through and cut out all the adverts "It will probably save around 200-500g".
