Currently Weymouth returning East Coast and looking to leave Studland Bay 02/07 and get to Gosport Marina. Can’t seem to fathom best time to leave so as to have favourable tide at and up the needles channel? Any advice direction would help. Obviously want to avoid wind over tide at needles especially as SW F5 looks to be the wind for some days.

Thanks, that concurs with what I had finally concluded was best. I’ll have to stem some adverse tide on my way over from Studland unfortunately and had considered using the North Channel to get round Hurst as the tide turns in my favour.
Thanks.

The tide across the bay is slight compared to the Solent so stemming it on the way is no big deal. Just take care in the North channel because it can be a Lee shore against the shingles bank. Nothing much to worry about, just be aware of the strength of the flood tide to sweep you close.

Either leave Studland at around 0400 or 1600 hours as this is about the start of the flood. Could leave earlier, but you may have around a knot of tide against you in Poole Bay as it is approaching spring tides.

My milk run for the last 40 years or so. Leave Studland 1 hour before low water (2 in the morning or 2.30 in the afternoon on 2/7 and via N Channel, rather than Needles and carry the tide all the way to Gosport. With the forecast wind I would go for early afternoon start, probably as early as 1.30pm as tides are weak in the bay at the tail of the ebb and you will be in Gosport well before dusk. No chance of wind against tide and you will enjoy whizzing past Hurst doing 8 or 9 knots over the ground!

Magic thanks. Had considered going early morning 02:30 but having gone into Poole westbound a week ago, remembered there’s a lot of pots around and I’d rather there was good light. Afternoon departure to arrive North channel and enter channel at around 16:00. Should be in Haslar by 20:00. I’ll go with that. Many thanks all.
