Hi, my good lady wife's arranged for some of her friends to come out on the boat the weekend of 25th June not realising it's the RTI race that weekend.. The idea was to stay in East Cowes (fully booked so would need to think of an alternative) and have a kness up in the Folly that evening + maybe anchor up in Osborne Bay for a while during the day

Having never set out in the Solent during the race weekend, I'm presuming all the above's a bad idea on a number of levels and I need to ask Deb to re-arrange with her friends... or... is there a way we can work this one so it still goes ahead? table in the folly is already booked from 6pm for a couple of hours on the 25th btw but I could cancel if there's better options

The boat is kept near Southampton.

hope you can advise.

Many Thanks Gary

p.s. we own a mobo but not sure that has a bearing on the outcome of the decision

The starts are really quite early - so the middle bit of the Solent off Cowes will be deserted from about 8am. But expect the Folly to be rammed and expect the crews to be having a lie-in on the Sunday if you're inside on the raft.

Gary

by far the best observation point is to anchor just SW of that funny little red and white lighthouse thingy at the end of those whitish-looking cliffs at the far end of the Isle of Wight. Plenty of space, but get there early, as it can become crowded later in the day since those raggie people have learned what a good fishing spot it is.

Enjoy the sights and sounds !

Overnight in Yarmouth, watch all the fleets come by at 0630 onwards then move up to Osbourne bay to see the run in but get into the river before the masses!!! You will rarely see 1700 boats in the same patch of water, particulalrly if it is a spinnaker start.

Have you tried contacting Island Harbour to see if they've got any room? They're beyond the Folly and access is somewhat constrained by tides, so the racers are less likely to be there. It's a nice, tranquil setting and the Folly is a short stroll away.

Alternatively, stay on the Beaulieu River and eat at Monty's in Beaulieu? Again, a nice stroll along the River, from Buckler's Hard, though further than Island Harbour to the Folly.

I've done quite a few RTI's But the sight of that many boats gets me every year. It's really something. And was especially amazing in the early morning last year.

So as above, start in Yarmouth get up early and watch the fleet go by, then lazy breakfast and scoot off to Osbourne bay, or one of the buoys off Cowes, to watch the finish.
