Hamble is used as an important hub, for yachts and yacht crew in order to reach the start of the Round the Island Race, and accordingly parking in Hamble is notoriously difficult. Be Warned- this season it's going to be a whole load worse!!
New parking regulations have been imposed with double yellow lines along the roads, and residential areas are now protected by parking permit schemes with hefty penalties for offenders. These measures have been imposed because yacht crews have persistently failed to use the long term parking facilities provided - opting instead to park in Hamble's residential streets and turning them into public car parks.

The general advise is; share a car if possible, come early (very early) to find a parking space, and prepare for a long walk from your car. There will be notices around guiding yacht crews to the free! parking facilities provided which is usually a field off School Lane. Please use these facilities! Wardens will be on patrol and the penalties for offenders are hefty. One good tip, is for yachts to pick-up their crew at MDL Mercury - this marina has a huge area for parking, and skippers can pick up their crew 'momentarily' on the outer hammerheads.
 
Be interested to know where these long term parking spaces are supposed to be. I've been based in the Hamble for over ten years and haven't heard of them.

I'm fortunate that I can park in the one of the clubs, but sometimes our own car park is too full, which usually means the public car parks are also full. Isn't the problem that there is simply not enough parking.
 
On a positive side it's looking like almost perfect weather for the race. Northerly 3 to 4.
Clear, sunny skies, slight sea state etc.
Should be a good day for (almost) everyone.

I know we've had this discussion before, but I'm going to reply with the same point.

"What long term parking?" Been sailing out of Hamble for years, and I've never heard of anything except the donkey field, which the council then went and took away half way through the winter series.

Parking is a mess, public transport is not a solution (it's impossible to get to hamble early enough on a Sunday), and I know more than one resident who is wholy against the imposition of charges.
 
Yes I remember 'Flaming' from before, but I thought it best to remind everyone again. The wardens are on patrol even as I type this string. The authorities generate more money from penalties than they do from parking charges - hence my warning to all those heading for Hamble.

There is no guaranteed sanctuary in the yacht club car parks I'm afraid - one club has devoted half of its car park as a 'dry sailing' park.

The Donkey Derby Field off School Lane should be open and there's more than enough room in there.

My main message to all, is avoid the residential streets. Throughout last season there were huge problems with vandalism on visiting cars - mainly targeting yacht crew. Since the new regulations (and touch wood) there hasn't been any vandalism so far this season.

Fair enough! Interesting about the vandalism, I didn't know that.

I did know that there were strong feelings though, as I had a "ticket" from some vigilante types whilst visiting a friend in the village telling me to "f-off yachtie boy". Which was interesting, as I wasn't in Hamble to sail so didn't head towards the river, and don't have any sailing car stickers.

Hmm, cant see much more than a 3 all day on any of the models I am looking at. To think we might get a good 4 going at some point would be lovely, but I think south of the island in an interupted F2 is going to be sloooooooooow.

Good job its an early start because by late afternoon it looks like we could have close to nothing.

Yes! you're absolutely right, there isn't enough parking and those to blame are the Hamble Harbour Board (a rather masonic and undemocratic organisation) who have allowed so many berths on the river without even thinking about where to park all these berths holders and associated crew, and the marinas who have developed over their car parks with dry stacking and 2nd hand boat dealerships.

With no where to park, and through no fault of their own, its rather forced all berth holders and crew to park in Village, thus making the residents the victims here. Appalling as it is, the abuse which 'Flaming' had to endure is quite common. Last season, in one street alone, the Police had recorded an estimated £28,000 worth of damages to vandalised cars ranging from; base ball bats to the windscreens, slashed tyres, keyed body work and wing mirrors being kicked off. Thankfully that seems to have stopped, but at a price to visitors.

I've often noticed on here that when someone uses my screen name in the body of a post they more often than not use quotation marks, which seems uncommon for other screen names - exactly as your post.

Hmmm - we were hoping for some strong breezes to power up. 3-4 looks optimistic too.
 
'Flaming'

In talking to a couple of people and passing on your unfortunate experience with this anti yachtie vigilante , its quite possible that you stumbled across our suspect vandal!

Would this have occurred around Meadow Lane/Hamble House Gardens by any chance?

This vandal mistook my car for a visiting yachtie, and went to work on it. He also nearly killed someone by slashing all four tyres on a car, were all four let go at 80mph down the M27.

It in all our interests to have this character locked up.
