Wind guru is more moderate.
10-14 Knots early in the race ( pre about 10)
18-23 round the back of the wight around lunchtime
15-19 in the Eastern Solent Mid - late afternoon

Also - no rain YEY!!

XC Weather seems closely aligned with Wind Guru, so I think its going to be a F5 max. Main problem is the fact that its a westerly. My crusing chute doesn't perform from about 160 degrees to 180 degrees as it gets blanketed by the main. Do we reach off and have more tide against us round the back of the island or try and goose wing the genoa? Have to see what its like on the day I guess

I think XC weather and windguru use the same model ( GFS) so they really should closely align!! WInd guru now looking more like mainly F3-4 with gusts of 5 round the south of the island but not quite making a 5 in the solent. 3 days and we'll know!

Re Downwind - look at your downwind tacking angles. Aiming 30 degrees off the rhumb line only increases the distance by 16% - so if you get a net speed increase ( after tide) of 20% you're well ahead. so 5 knots on rhumb line is worse than 6 knots aimed off a bit. Worth spending some time understanding yours.

Just had a very pleasant surprise from Pantaenius as well.

Rang them to say was doing RTI - wanted to be covered etc, what was the premium.
Informed that Ts & Cs were changed at renewal and that racing was now covered.

Go Pants!

Might be worth a double check that you are fully covered - I'm with GJW and racing is included as well, but the rig and sails are only covered if damaged as a result of a collision, or total loss. If mast comes down or sails split when racing they are not covered.

Not what you want to find when you get your boat hauled out for a quick pre-race scrub!

Rudder.jpg

24 very anxious hours later we've got confirmation that it's repairable (and was repaired this morning) and there was fortunately no damage to the steerage of the rudder.

We're back in the race (ISCRS 6), and hoping the wind on race day reflects the current windfinder forecast of 12-16 kts.

The tracker seems to be a bit Mickey Mouse! I have input 5 boats to track but only the first in the list is showing up. Or am I doing something wrong?

Edit: Looks like certain peeps haven't turned their trackers on!

So did you get any photos of any of us??

Reported casualty rate was one man overboard, two people with head injuries, one person with sea sickness and one with a broken arm, plus a major grounding off Ventnor. Not bad I suppose for the number of participants. However with a head injury fatality from a yacht earlier this year is it not time that we took that risk more seriously? Bump caps, while not meeting safety hat standards, are not uncomfortable to wear, reasonably stylish, and might prevent a life-changing injury. an investment of under a tenner seems good to me.

Jac - I still need to go through photos because it wasn't easy checking for sail numbers whilst trying to stay close enough to the race to take pictures.

I had planned on putting pictures onto the official website that has a section for the general public to be able to upload their photos and allow others to search by yacht name or sail number.

http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk/web/code/php/main_c.php?map=rir15&ui=rir4&style=std&override=&section=multimedia&page=photoupload

Unfortunately this site now appears to limit the number of uploads to twenty but worse than that is that it shows your email address to all and sundry.

I would have expected the official website to at least have had controls such that photo requestors could have contacted the individual photographers via the website thus no exchange of real emails... Shame - or we'd have put up a few photos by now

As to tracking - Seems like the website (from our point of view) was rather overloaded. Hard to get any update via the website and I seem to think that only you (Jac) and Nooka were the only ones from here with tracker on.

We should have seen you (Jac) pass by Seaview some time late afternoon but by then we were anchored and taking pictures from a little further away. Will check sail numbers later though.

Great race for us,
7hrs 6mins elapsed time

1st J109 out of 27 IRC boats,
2nd IRC division 2B
5th J Boat (of any type)
12th IRC Group 2
43rd Overall IRC

It's good for us as it was a last minute scratch crew - everyone worked well together and we came home with big smiles.

Cheers
