Hi all,

I have some great books in my little catalogue. Diesel Engine Handbooks, Nigel Calder's electrical / mechanical books etc and few on knots.
Now, rough weather motor boating. I'm looking for a decent book on rough weather handling. Ideally I'd like something tailored towards decent sized motorboats (mine is a semi-displacement 50footer and 20 tonnes) rather than books tailored to RIBS or Speedboats..

Does anyone have any recommended gems?

cheers,

Nick

Nick, I think you’ve got a Trader? Not a book, but you might want to revisit the thread about the delivery from Plymouth to Norfolk of a similar vessel a few years ago. Made an excellent read. The rough weather handling of the boat was one of the features of the report….

There was a Trader 41+2 for sale next to our Ocean 37 Hunter when we went to look at Hunter and I remembered that thread when I seen the boat, she was a bit more expensive (a lot!) than Hunter though, also a very nice looking Searay 390 came up for sale at the brokers just as we bought Hunter, oh that one would have been tempting, but still very happy we went for the Ocean 37.

Just to clarify, I've been doing this gig for most of my life so I'm not looking for advice on when or when not to go out..
But, much like when I did my Yachtmaster, I like to learn. Reading up on boatmanship in different conditions is good prep. I like to be prepared for conditions even if I don't go looking for them.
So if anyone has any interesting books on rough weather handling (steered towards motorboats) then great I'd appreciate the recommendations. Otherwise, thanks but no thanks.

I keep hearing the old adage - better to be in port wishing you were at sea than to be out at sea wishing you were in port - not much help when weather catches you out though!
Yep.. In the same way I like to know that my liferaft, fire extinguishers, epirb, DSC position on VHF etc etc all work. Not because I plan on being in situations to need them, but that I can have a relaxed journey knowing I'm confident they'll work IF in a rare situation I need them..

I'd much rather be versed on situations that I never end up experiencing at sea rather than going out each time hoping I don't meet bad situations which I wouldn't know the best thing to do.
