The Inner Harbour at Rothesay officially opened for it first visitor on Good Friday morning and my friend being him battled through rough seas to be the first visitor to the new inner harbour berths. So once again Blue Hoolit makes the papers on the Clyde. Her arriving Good Friday.

One 18th April our club Kip Cruising Club had our first muster of the season to Rothesay and we had 14 boats, 12 of whom stayed overnight and we enjoyed a needle match of putting in the afternoon and an excellent meal at the Esplanade Hotel. We also managed to bask in lovely sunshine all weekend. On leaving Rothesay on the Sunday morning a group of us headed to Wreck Bay for lunch but with the light winds it was more afternoon tea!

The new pontoons which now add an extra 40 berths are excellent and I was not even aware of the ferries arriving or leaving. They are mainly for use by overnight berthers. Access is via the lifting bridge and this is operated by the Pier master and not Bute Berthing Company. The bridge is only opened when there is no ferry at the pier and by contacting the Pier master. Contact on channel 16 or phone 01700 503842. On Sat and Sun they were kept busy.

Contrary to what some are saying the traffic lights at the harbour entry are only for entry to the outer harbour and not the bridge which has its own lights. Also the outer harbour lights should only be at red during ferry manoeuvres and not as happens when the ferry is docked at the pier.

It was great to see the new marina being fully used on Sat but sad to see the long west pontoon empty but it is still early in season. The long pontoon in the inner harbour as you enter, is still not open as some dreging has just finished in the area and a survey is to be carried out. This will accommodate large boats.

Here's another pic of Blue Hoolit snug on her pontoon, taken on the Saturday:

I arrived mid-afternoon on the Saturday by which time half the pontoons in the inner harbour were taken but there were still some vacant that night. The outer harbour pontoons looked full.
Two observations; the swing bridge closes with a heck of a clatter and I wonder how robust it will prove to be. It would not be good to be in the inner harbour if the bridge breaks. I could not get the security gate at the top of the ramp to open with the combination I was given by the Bute Berthing fee collector and neither could anyone else I spoke to. The result was people climbing over, putting their hands through the railing to use the inside handle or just propping the gate open.
Just make sure you can get back onto the pontoons if you go into town.

Think you will find the written in number is not what it appears the last number is not 2 but Z.

Yes I wonder how long before the bridge shakes it's self to bits with the almighty clatter as it comes down. Although I could think of much worse place to be stuck, a weeks free berthing in Rothesay, just hope weather is good.

Gordon do you keep your boat on mooring in Loch Ridden just up from the Tom Moat's old boathouse? Below the MacIlravie's bungalow. Used to keep my last boat there. Spent Sunday night in L Ridden boy did it get cold.

Who runs the moorings group there?

My great-grandfather's company built the original bridge in the 1890's. It was operating flawlessly until the late 70's when it was hit by a tug.

Just hope there is not an emergency (fire springs to mind) and the bridge gets stuck.

Yep, been following this on Bluemoment.

We will be there in June.

I take it the Fish & Chip shop is still there?

We had a fabulous night there last year on the Scuttlebutt Cruise.

Rothesay without a fish and chippie! Never!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes it is still there along with the corny jokes. But it does not spoil the taste of the chips.

Apparently the bridge can be opened manually if the hydraulics chuck it.

I can't wait to see the fun & games on a busy weekend with a strong northerley blowing in the harbour. Plenty fenders I would suggest!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
