ropes

is there anything wrong with putting your ropes in the washing machine ?
Its OK provided you do something to prevent them becoming irrecoverably tangled. ( in pillow case helps a bit but better to coli and secure the coils )
wrap any fittings which cannot be removed in a couple of old socks , or similar, and secure
Dont wash old braided ropes that are approaching end of life ( they develop multiple hernias)
Dont use fabric softener

Yes. But do not use any soap.
During manufacture each fibre has a coating of a lubricant of some sort included to enable the fibres to slide over one another during tension, to reduce heat caused by internal friction and to allow elasticity. Soap will remove this, weakening the rope.
Just rinse and tumble in warm water.

Yes! SWMBO, only do it if you know that you can get the wash cycle over and done with while she is out and before she gets back.
Put them in a pillow case or something similar and use a cool wash, not more than 40.

I seem to have the opposite problem to most here. If I leave any ropes around at home she whips them through the machine without me asking.

The important thing that the OP needs to be aware of is that SHE will know, no matter how distant she will know when she gets back, if he confesses when questioned he may be forgiven but for all time he will have destroyed the vital myth that the operation of the machine is beyond him, after that it is only a small step to stripping duvets and pillowcases. So it worth considering the tactic of asking for assistance with his task, if he is like ithet he is sorted.

What is this washing machine of which you speak?

I always wash sans pillowcase & add softener, untangling is therapeutic

In a talk by Marlow ropes during the RYA day at Eastbourne YC we were cautioned not to wash ropes in the machine for the reason stated by Allanc above, but to hand was only.

Been washing mine for years on hot wash with plenty of powder (Tesco basic for us with a water softener). But do make sure the ends are either well sealed or whipped first Never had any wrecked, or in such a tight knot they won't undo. If they have any green in them I chuck in some bleach to get rid.

Awaiting incoming.

And be warned, even if the machine lasts another 10 years before it breaks down your missus will most certainly blame it on this 1 incident
