Yes, furling sail and I've been thinking about that.
I currently tie the halyards off using just the outer parts of braided rope. While I'm up there, I might as well use another one to tie the furler off.

That's if I remember to take the sheets off at all.

The only soft shackles we have moused are the ones that used to hold the code 0 inhauler blocks. But I’ve now spliced the blocks onto the inhaul line. They spent a lot of time not under tension, and it could have been possible to lose a very expensive block.

Whenever I’m leaving the boat on its berth I tie a line an couple of turns around the furled genny through the tack cringle. I’ve seen too many sails destroyed by coming unfurled in a gale.

I used these for my jib sheets for years an early variant of a soft shackle I guess - never had a problem with them coming undone unexpectedly.

We have never had a soft shackle come undone in any application, but while rare, it is not impossible for this to occur . You can "mouse" a soft shackle using a cable tie. Add the cable tie at the base of the eye, rather than cinching the knot.

If you sew a small strip of doublesided velcro to one leg of the eye, you can achieve the same effect but reusable.

I saw an arrangement once that was like the home-spliced version posted by danaskip above, but with a short length of thinner cord somehow spliced through one leg of the eye (or maybe just knotted, I can't remember); the ends of this could then be tied with a reef knot around the waist of the eye if extra security was needed.

It's to make opening them easier.

I use a single length of rope for my sheets with a long loop in the centre, constructed using an Alpine Butterfly knot.
The long loop is attached to the crinkle with a soft shackle.
Using the Alpine Butterfly knot means that the sheets exit the knot at 180° to eachother.
I've used this setup for about six or seven years, it works well.
