Rope Hernias

Washing running-rigging at home has resulted in the appearance of several hernias in a couple of 'ropes' - the red-flecked spinnaker halyard and the solid blue pole-uphaul.

Both are admittedly getting on a bit in age, and the gut-busts only seems to have occurred where the other sheathing was already chafed.

Time for new string...?

That can happen if you have something in the wash that catches the outer braid and then pulls the inner core ... such as mistakenly clipping the free end of cable ties - leaving that jaggy stub end ... or a shackle still on the rope ... etc.

Good point. Both ropes still had snap-shackles on them, which I should have put in a sock first, but I suspect the original culprit was long-term chafe in their positions on the mast.
