Rope cutter service

I have a rope cutter fitted. Was on when I acquired the boat a couple of years ago. Not fouled net or line in my ownership but can't speak for previous history. Are these devices set and forget or do they need some maintaining? If so what should I be doing please? Easy job?

It depends which one you have ... if its the Gator type with the castellated two part design - then it has a synthetic spacer set between the two ... that can wear and be replaced after years of use.

I would suggest you determine what Rope Cutter you have and then search for info .... we cannot answer properly without knowing which you have.

Quick think about it and description is fixed and spinning baldes which are serated and very sharp. There is what I can only regard as a fixing which is on the side of the P bracket just forward of the cutter. I assume that's an anchor point. Cutting action is scissor like.
Didn't know there are different types. Every day is a school day!

If it has very sharp serrated teeth that look like...

Then it's likely to be the Ambassador stripper.. Servicing instructions at the link below although you will see different instructions for either shaft or saildrive fitment.. They're a very helpful business and local if you're near Winchester.

Their blades now look fancy (top pic below) as opposed to the lower picture showing the original plain face but still very sharp looking blades.

Agree it sounds like an Ambassador as Martin J shows ...

They do need to be checked .... and that synthetic wafer thin spacer does need replacement after a term. The time to replace is when feeler gauge shows the manual stated limit lost.

Not to frighten you but I have this fitted but the fwd section has been removed after it sheered one mount bolt and ripped out the others ....

I left the rear shaft part on as that still actually cuts some of the gear that gets in there ... but of course not as much as if all parts mounted.

I knew the cutter had failed in some way as when motoring - it was like someone banging a bell under the stern .. boat was lifted and the fwd section was just loose and clanging about.

That is a fail safe mechanism. The bolts are meant to shear under excessive load to avoid damage to to the rest of the drive. Just buy another block and use the same holes if you can or mount it on the other side.

I did consider whether a round clip system could hold it instead of bolting .... but never got round to it.

Perfectly safe to do it on that type of bearing housing - I have just done it on mine as the boat was originally fitted with a Spurs cutter which has different spacing. did it on a previous boat as well. Lots of experience over the last 30 years selling and fitting these things.IMG_20220916_123848.jpg

If it's one of ours (quicKutter) just check wear on spool, a properly installed system is unlikely to need any more than inspection. spool is designed to be sacrificial and wear but we see ones on Lifeboats and fishing boats looking good after several years.

Spurs on my FV, 3:1 box lasted years without a bearing change. Did knock them off twice, but saved the day many times. On another boat, 1 .1 : 1 box, in and out of Hayle, sandy, two bearings a year.
