As it seems there are quite a few boats wintering on the Tevere river, there is a flood warning for tonight, they are possibly opening the upstream dam, which would mean a big increase in river level; highest level is expected tomorrow 1200-1400 says the Civil protection

if you are not there it might be useful to get more direct news from the yard where your boat is moored

Here, just upstream of the lifting bridge at Fiumicino they have put the flood defences in place and we are packing in case we are evacuated. The river is running at about 4 kts and I heard that Isla Tiburtina is flooded, in Rome.

One local has just told me that usually it is worse on the Fiumara Grande than on the Fiumicino canal. Worse is a relative term.

All of the boats at Constallation Nautica are safe at the time of writing and the yard staff are on site.

No official update as far as I know however a meeting is scheduled later this morning. The river is still at this morning's level and is running at about the same speed. Fewer trees coming down. We have slight rain/sleet and a W/SW breeze. There is a lot of activity in the various yards and premises fronting the river. I walked down to Fiumicino town along the canal bank this morning and the fishing fleet is in. Interestingly, the flow rate is much faster downstream of the lifting bridge - around 6kts, I estimate, 4kts above.

It seems to me if anything really nasty is expected that they will get the fishing fleet, pilot, tugs, and harbour master's boats out of the canal -- assuming that they have the warning, of course. Sea conditions would be fine for a passage to Civitavecchia. We'd probably do that ourselves but we are rafted up inside four others and the lifting bridge, for the time being, does not lift as it is being repaired.

Will update again later.

Update:- We have been informed that they will be opening the sluices at 6pm local time i.e. in 40 mins time, well after sunset. Nobody here knows what to expect though nobody has been evacutated; during a similar crisis two years ago, all boats were evacuated by a large team of people from the community.

Update:- 1930 local time. Water level has risen 0.2m but could be wind or tide related. Nothing to report....maybe they opened the gates late or maybe the 'wall of water' they were talking about is still on its way. Anyway, all is well right now.

James, the latest news is that they are opening the sluices gradually...Bable Fish did a quaint little translation....

“(The level of the water of) the river will continue to raise itself slowly and we expect to assist to the maximum tip in the course of the night and in the first hours tomorrow”, Miozzo has said. “Nothing panic, draft of a emergency under control”.

Elsewhere in the article they mention times of between 2000 and 2200.

Right now the river is still high and running fast but there are no problems.

It is now 0910 and the river is back to the same level as during most of yesterday. Running fast but problems.

The authorities announced this morning that the flooding is decreasing but they are watching bad weather forecast for Sunday. The GFS model is showing heavy rain on Sunday from around midnight to 7am and on Monday from 1300 to 2200. However, the heavy raid forecast by GFS for yesterday did not arrive. The forecast is mostly dry until late on Sunday and I think that even if we get what GFS is forecasting we should be OK.

I will update this thread as things progress.

It's been a pleasure to receive PMs from people who have stayed here in the past -- thank you for writing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sunday lunchtime. The river has dropped and the flow has dropped, although still flowing at above normal speed. The GFS model is showing very heavy rain this afternoon and tonight and clouds are gathering as I type this. The flood defences are still in place. Fiumicino-online. net gives the following, translated by Google's translator from the Google toolbar (seems better than BableFish) though still quaint....

Termination of the emergency Tiber

Fiumicino ha superato senza gravi conseguenze l'arrivo dell'ondata di piena del fiume Tevere alla foce Fiumicino has passed without serious consequences for the arrival of the wave of full Tiber River to the mouth

The phenomenon to the wave of full Tiber River to the mouth was kept under constant monitoring by the municipal held in continuous contact with the leaders of the Civil Defense national and regional levels, the Prefecture and the Agency Regional to protect soil. It 'was just that, through its technicians to play a very delicate and important tracking in real time all the changes in the level of the waters of the Tiber, is worthy of both the Ripetta Bridge Scafa, something that has allowed to avoid the order for evacuation of the inhabitants of Passo della Sentinel contrary to what some erroneously stated by the media. However careful monitoring over the area of the mouth and in particular in the area born in golenale the Tiber. Throughout the crisis there was full cooperation from all citizens of the Sentinel Pass which, informed of the risk of abandonment of housing, were ready to leave their homes without oppose any refusal as happened in other areas.
The Mayor Mario Canapine, on behalf of the entire office, wants to thank all those who have worked hard, day and night to monitor the crisis and ensure all forms of assistance, if necessary.
