Roller furling difficult - any ideas, please?

Make sure that you are getting halyard wrap at the top. This can wreck your forestay. It is common for the halyard to go through a diverted attached to the mast to keep it cleat of the forestay for this reason.
NOT getting halyard wrap, as in its a bad thing, I assume.
Maybe obvious, but just in case...

On a 22ft'r ?? Probably wrong - but being an older boat and in the modest size bracket - I doubt its a Furlex ...

Need a photo of the drum in general - then we can identify as T says ...
THINK mines a Plastimo, on a similar size boat. (Trident 24) according to a PO.

He also said they dont need any maintenance, though, so perhaps I may not be keeping it long...

It's a Rotostay F5 and the halyard comes to the drum.
Rotostay furlers should have plastic covered forestay wire. If yours is plain 1 x 19 stainless, then it will bind up. It's hard to get the plastic covered wire these days, but a plastic pneumatic hose sleeve makes a good substitute.
