Rodman 41with IPS.

Before the person is cursed as an idiot - I do the same thing !

I am in the med. As I come out the bow of the boat is very close ( very) to the hammerhead opposite. There are bow lines in the water either side at the back. I use the thruster until the boat has turned about 30-40 degrees and I am guaranteed clear of the bow lines ( which are submerged at an angle). Can I do it with engines, of course I can ( I rarely use the thruster coming in ) but the hassle of cutting bow lines make me happy to push the button.

My last boat was a Squadron 65 with dual hydraulic thrusters - hence unlimited use time - if it was simpler then I just used them.

I never really understand why using a piece of kit fitted on a boat is frowned upon!

I think I'd do exactly the same in the scenario you've just described...

There will always be a circumstance when using the bow thruster is beneficial, however in the circumstance I'm describing it is ridiculous and you do not need to feel defence of your actions necessary. The boat in question is 51ft and there is plenty of room, a Sunseeker 86 performs a 180 spin in the same space.

I'm not disputing AoA but the fact that with the bow rise and design the helmsman needs to be standing on a step ladder in order to see where he is going. Style before function springs to mind. Then there is an excessively big hole being dragged behind. Fine when these boats are out in rough weather and cleaving through waves in a commercial service application but on a leisure vessel the cons of having to have overly large engines to overcome the inefficiencies such a hull provides verse actual practical use is a egotism not so different to owning a Humvee in central London. The fact that they are held as an epitome of refinement that all boats should aspire to while denigrating all others doesn't just cement such a simile but renders it a standing joke.
Here you are Bruce .....take your pick .

Itama 75 vs Magnum 80 .
Its all in the hull form , and having the horse power to move water aside as opposed to fly over on top .....and bounce if it’s not flat .

I'm probably never going to the end of this but... I quite like them, especially the blue one. Not so much for the Solent perhaps.

Are those periscopes on the radar arch? Because you need them.
Nah B the faster you go the lower the AoA .Infact the lowering of the AoA with speed ( needs grunt you know ) is the considered by consensus amongst naval architects as THE definition of planning .

Did you miss the vid I posted , I did it the other day .Quite topical as I run down a IPS Absolute FB , he was done at 25 knots and still pointing to the moon .? ?

Final comments after moving both boats.
Rodman 41 with IPS.
Quiet.Smooth. Light on its feet and very very manoeuvrable.
Our new skipper slipped his Rodman into its not easy to get into permanent berth like a pro first go and with a down draft from the adjacent block of flats making life difficult.

Princess 388 on shafts
Handles like a tub of lard. No where near as quiet but its 100K cheaper.

Summary.
Would love the Rodman with shafts. :)

Very impressed with the practical simple easy to maintain materials and design of the interior of the Rodman 41.
What clinched it for me was the rather sniffy response from a Fairline owner who came along for the journey.
No where near enough shiney bling and glitz and pointless embellissement for him on this boat, all a bit too sensible and workmanlike . :):):)

Yes I thought that when I was looking. Spent some time with the guys at RBS Marine at Bidham Pool, looking for the right combo of boat and deal... :)

I have had a Fairline Squadron and a Fairline Targa, they would both good boats for sure, the Rodman is smart inside but not as flash as the Fairlines but out at sea it wins by miles, the Rodman 1250 is the best sea boat we have ever owned

RBS are the best boat sales company I have ever dealt with, genuine people and no BS, Angie and I would go to them again without hesitation, that said we have always been treated well by all agents and have only good memories.

What’s Rodmans Co history ?
Have they been bust twice? Like FL !

I understand they have a background in commercial boats ? Where seakeeping = income stream .

Just trying to get a handle why they have majored on seakeeping and minored on the “ glitter “ .

Rodman - Exclusive pleasure craft and fishing - Rodman - Rodman Polyships S.L.

website tells you all about them. Strong commercial/military main business - hence the well built features. I have a Rodman 38,flybridge. Smart but simple inside and clearly built so 6 big marines can go on holiday on it in their boots and they won't damage anything.

O Gawd ....................have been on the interweb looking a 38 and it gets worse, there is 25% of a pension looking for home :(
Also , high hours early 41 in the Canaries going cheap, me wondering exactly how do they get that sort of boat with such a limited range down there. ?
