I wouldn't argue with that sentiment about quaility of the kit, but I believe it would be too bigger task for the RNLI to take on. As for the kit we buy, as you know it's highly modified and as such costs an arm and a leg.

But the fact that RNLI kit is usually highly modified tells its own story!

I was interested to see that you don't use "breathable" oilies, for instance, and the reliance on Thomas and Nicholson pattern fisherman anchors is also worthy of note.

It sounds to me that your over 13.7 mtrs in which case we can't help as you come under the Merchant Shipping Regs and whilst I am familiar with some of them I'm not familiar with all of them.
Are you up to speed with the Solas V regs?

I think so... I believe all we had to add was the Signals sheet, as everything else was already in place. My understanding is that only the subset of Solas V applies to pleasure vessels under 150 tons, so in that respect we are no different to a 20' speedboat in terms of our obligations (how many speed boats that operate out of 'harbours' even carry a radar reflector, even i they cannot 'practically' fit it?).

It is quite possible that I have misunderstood the regulations (I've only been on the boat twice this year due to various crises), but I think I understood the implications.

The biggest issue is actually the radar reflector - I cannot find a radar reflector with a 10 sqm RCS - the Firdell Blipper (as fitted) is only about 2 sqm, and is probably one of the benchmark devices. an octahedral would be difficult to fit (perhaps the practicality cluase comes into effect). I draw some comfort that 30 tonnes of Aluminium will generate some signal on its own. It seems as though I need an octohedral reflector with 30" sides to generate a 10sqm RCS - come on! Indeed a See Me might be the only way to go.

At present, anyone who has a SEA Check is given the opportunity to give the RNLI feedback about the check by means of a feedback form. They are planning to extend this, and contact a sample of those checked a few weeks later to find out what has resulted from the check. As Boatman says, the areas they will be investgating are covered by his three questions.

1) No.
2) Will be doing so but they were on my shopping list already.
3) No, very happy with the procedure but I noted that a boat alongside me in the marina refused point blank to have one done. Some people are real dumbos.

and I thought the idea of using the YBW forum to get some feedback was very good.

I really need some hard evidence that our efforts do contribute to the RNLI's core business - saving lives (although we do it by changing people's attitudes and behaviour in the marine environment), and the responses to your post were very encouraging.
