Rivets - monel or aluminium?

Surely a 4mm monel rivet is likely to be stronger than a 5mm aluminium rivet. Maybe it depends on the diameter of the holes that were there. The original rivets were likely to have been monel. Rambling a bit here...

Bit of Fred drift... I did some practice riveting on the cooker today, but I had to disassemble the rivet gun first in an attempt to remove a 5mm mandrel stick in a 4mm hole.

After much fiddling I can (with difficulty) get the gun to pull the rivet tight and snap the mandrel, but it does not drop through into the collector. When I look the mandrel has somewhat squintified the chuck.

It's a Faithfull heavy duty gun. Can anyone give me an idiot's guide to adjusting it?

Mine has different size screw in nozzles for each size pop rivet.

I find you need to fully open the rivet gun to allow the mandrel to fall out.

If it's the same as mine... from the tip...
You have the screw in, changeable nozzle. Choose the correct size for the rivets to be used.
The nozzle holder.
A lock ring.

To adjust the jaws...
Loosen the lock ring.
Screw the nozzle holder in or out a bit. (Probably in if it won't release the mandrel).
Tighten the lock ring.

As Roger says you need to open the handles wide before the mandrel will drop out.

Edit: Just saw your reply, sounds like you know how to adjust the jaws. You need to get the balance right (grip v release).
