I need to source 6mm or 1/4" stainless steel blind rivets to re-fit the roller mechanism on the end of the boom. Does anyone know where I will be able to buy these. The only website I have found so far is in the USA.
stainless steel rivets are not monel rivets - these are two different materials. Chances are however that you would be better advised to use monel rivets (along with some duralac corrosion inhibitor). Monel rivets should be available in blister packs in your local chandlers, riggers can also probably supply at a reduced price.
www.a2a4.co.uk do stainless and www.gtc-direct.com do both , but anything over 4.8mm is difficult to get hold of. Most chandlers sell little packets of monel rivets for an incredibly high price. There are a few local suppliers on the south coast but that's no help to you on the Clyde!
Monel rivets are slightly easier to set than stainless, especially for the size you're talking about. You'll also need a large riveter if you haven't already got one - the lazy-tong type maybe. If you can't get 6mm rivets and the riveter to go with it, you could possibly use threaded inserts instead. Don't forget the Duralac whatever method you end up using.
I have access to an air riveter and the concertina type so hopefully they will do. The best price so far for 6mm Monel rivets is £3.40 for 3, no doubt plus P&P.
Hi,
I had exactly the same problem when trying to repair my z-spars mast. I needed 1/4" monel rivets , contacted z-spars and they sent me 6 of 'em , FREE of charge and they didnt even charge me for the first class post !
EXCELLENT customer service, and am going to get them to replace my standing rigging when it needs doing on my Quarter Tonner.
By the way, I have no connection with z-spars.
Maybe , ask them nicely and they will send you some, if you have their rig, if not then make a contribution..
Regards,
Matt.
