River flows

Thames at Henley seems to have peaked now, should start going down soon, all upstream gauges also flat lined and some dropping. Bit of rain forecast on Thursday but shouldn't be enough to make a difference :)

There are a number of grooves cut into the wall of a lock building at Allington.
The highest one is about 5ft above the footpath.
Can remember when it was not unknown for the river level to be to the top of the arches under Maidstone Bridge.
Seem also to recall that at one time, years ago ,they had a choice, flood Yalding or Maidstone.
This led to much acrimony between the two locations.

The one up side, it has certainly cleared all the rubbish out of the river and perhaps hopefully has flushed out some of the pollution and toxic waste from the gravels on the river bed.

That's great! The Water Co's can top up all the missing pollutants and no-one will notice. Not that the 'Authorities' are even looking!

River flows back to normal on the Medway.
OGs boat is firmly stuck the wrong side of the lock until contractors finish work on Friday afternoon and remove a rather substantial temporary bridge over the tidal lock chamber.
Have had to rejig plans regards going up to St Kats.

Of mice and men and DW canoe race paddlers - it looks like it's either going to be record times or total carnage (senior paddlers are currently considering whether it's a good idea to attempt the non-stop race, which includes paddling overnight, on red boards)

I remember a number of yars ago in the late 90s one of the kayaks in the Devizes to Westminster race got the wrong channel downstream of Cookham bridge, bailed out and the boat ended up going over the Hedsor weir. They were lucky as they managed to land upstream of the weir. You don't want to be gobbled up by the weirs there isn't enough room under the radials to shoot through in the boat.
