I need to buy a storm jib for my Rival 32, and there appear to be some good deals in the "nearly new" market. Does anyone know how big a storm jib for this clas of boat should be?

Cruising ground is West of Scotland.

Thanks in advance.

Alisdair, Can't help with the R32 but R34 may be a useful guide to base your measurements upon.

Storm Jib Area = 75 sq ft
Cloth Weight 10 oz
Luff 21 ft
Foot 9.00 ft
Leach 17.00 ft
Luff Perpendicular 7.15 ft

I believe the difference in 'J' dimension between R34 and R32 is 8 inches (R34 12.68; R32 12.00); 'I' dimension is the same, 37.72 ft, but check your own boat to confirm.

These dimensions are as spec'ed for the storm sail set on forestay (not on inner stay) with loads taken to masthead. Note: there was no provision for inner stay/runners on original Peter Brett rig - for RR headsail storm jib provision was with strops surrounding rolled genoa.

Best wishes,

Ron

Alisdair,

I can confirm that the 32 and the 34 rig is identical according to my Peter Brett drawings. I set my original 32 storm jib on an inner forestay, which is anchored 18" down from the masthead and 12" back from the stem head.

Following on from Ron I remember a R34 I used to sail regularly had a detachable inner forestay and runners for setting up if the storm jib was actually deployed. The thinking was that bringing the storm jib aft a foot or so helped to keep the rig balanced.

I did much the same on TRYVAL, R 32 with a lever tensioner, never considered there was a need for runners. Bill.

Thanks, all. Midnight Drifter has a detachable second forestay, with an attachment on the foredeck for it. I will need to buy a lever of sorts to handle the tensioning. (more dosh! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif) (or, I suppose, a small block and tackle?). However, the second stay runs from just below the masthead crane, so no need for runners, I think.
