Sad to report the passing of Byron Alexander earlier this morning. Best known, perhaps, on the Thames Forum, but in earlier years often seen in Ramsgate with his Princess "Ocean Eagle".
Many boat clubs and organisations on the Thames enjoyed his hospitality and he thoroughly enjoyed seeing his river frontage occupied by boats from club meets, to ADLS to Swan Uppers.
the river has lost a character and a friend.

Sad to hear of his passing , over the years we spoke on many occasions both on here via pm and on the phone , he once offered me use of his mooring should I have ever ventured up the Thames , he also passed my number on to others .
RIP Byron .

Unfortunately I never met Byron but remember him being a regular contributor to these forums in the early days. His posts were always witty, helpful, kind and his knowledge was encyclopedic. I also remember him generously hosting some forum get togethers at his house on the Thames.

I image the expression "a life well lived" would be very apt in his case.

RIP Byron and I hope you're having suitably nautical adventures in heaven, perhaps cruising alongside Haydn.

+1 - Often used to admire his house from the Beetle and Wedge on the opposite side of the river and occasionally saw the man himself conning his very smart ex-Thames Conservancy launch.

Very sad news. I remember Byron as a very constructive contributor to the forum back when it was the mobo forum. Never met him but passed him in his launch during our 2013 cruise to the non-tidal Thames. RIP

+1 well said Pete, I remember him well too from the early days.

What a great loss. I first met Byron too many years ago. He was in Miss Pritchard's class and I was in Mrs Fort' s class. This was Cardiff around 1954. His father was what we referred in those days as a Cardiff Greek. Nothing racist about this. He was a Greek shipowner with I believe a one liberty ship . Byron did sea a service and I believe attained his master's ticket..
Some years later along comes the internet. In amongst the maze of CompuServe I found a boating forum mainly inhabited by Americans who like so many made it their life to see where you stood in their pecking order. One of the sysops was Peggie Hall the Princess of Poop. Watching Byron wind up the Americans was quite amusing when quizzed. He was frequently sent to The Bilge by Peggie. It was during this period we discovered we had been to school together at Gorilla Villa in Cardiff. Byron never forgave me for introducing him to Peggie who had boarded Ocean Eagle (the Broom) at a wee berth beside a certain Riverside pub in Kingston. Had endeavoured to meet a few forum members during this visit and even Nessie paid her respects . We would chat on the phone from time to time when I was down south and sometimes meet up where the Pimm's was flowing at a Riverside regatta or other nautical get together. Byron migrated to this forum almost as soon as it opened and here continued to share his vast knowledge especially regarding who made which boat and when from the dark ages to the present. He will certainly be missed here and along the river banks.

RIP Byron.

Very sad news. Byron was one of the first Mobo forumites and contributed hugely with his droll and witty posts. RIP Byron. He will be missed

Yes this is sad news and I can only echo what has been said by others on here. For many years I have enjoyed reading his lovely and often self deprecating sense of humour combined with his encyclopaedic knowledge of all things boaty and many topics beyond the water. He would go to great lengths to help and answer questions usually going off line via PM which I always appreciated.

I only actually met him once which must have been about 15 years ago when he invited then forumites to his house. There must have been at least 30 of us and I think he only knew one or two in the non virtual world. He and Eileen were fantastic and very generous hosts and provided a superb buffet and drinks. It was a great evening which I remember well, not least because of Byron's wit and wisdom.

He was a real character and a very decent man.

Very sad news, I used to chat to Byron on here and get advice for many years. later he invited us to his house for a wee party. we arrived and the party was in full flow with lots of people from the forum attending.
Byron had a great sense of humor so when I mentioned that it was my birthday (end of January) he asked his wife to set up a cake for me.

so this out of date Xmas cake was prepared on the spot and candles were lit.

Byron you will be missed, RIP
