Rigs: is sloop really the best?

Thanks for the info /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I guess we all have our prejudices and are biased to what we think is the best way for this or that (me guilty)..........but for the life of me, I can't understand why anybody would be so ..................well, can't think of a polite way to put it right now. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I guess it takes all sorts? Interesting boat by the way, Yachtmaster or PPL to drive it??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Trolls FAO snowleapard

Blimey! took your advice and did a Google, found a good site that explained all about Trolls and what to do, or not to do when confronted with one of those critters. Who are these people, Psychopath.com!!!???? I certainly hope nobody ever thinks I am one of those! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

To be honest, I didn't think I was particularly niave, but I am 58 years old, and I have never heard of this Troll thing, until now. Oh well, ya live and learn.

Re: Trolls FAO snowleapard

Smiffy, like you I learnt what a troll was on these pages.... as you say you live and learn. When I replied to you about trolling, I was doing it with a smile on my face...
This has been a great thread adn I am glad to have read some of the comments. I have a "traditional" sloop (on an AWB), but it has set me thinking about junks, I'd like to try one out one day. Just for the time when I will finally manage to get on with my "dream" of travelling the seas..

Re: Trolls FAO snowleapard

More interesting reading on junks for me... Glad to see others are actually realising that just because something is not common that it is not good, or because it is eponmous it is necessarily better (is that use of eponymous right, or should that be ubiquitous? sorry, not a teacher, just offshore monkey).

Looking at most modern offshore race boats, it seems the gaffer is coming back into fashion- look at the top of any Open 60's rig and deny this!

When I sell mine, I already plan to look at a junk or 2 and hopefully get a test sail.

Re: Trolls FAO snowleapard

Eponymous means having the same name as in the title of the work so yes, in this case sloops are eponymous.

There's also a lot of them about. However, like Labour MPs, the fact that there are a lot of sloops doesn't mean they are the best for everyone!

Re: Trolls FAO snowleapard

Thanks Snowleopard, never quite got the use of that one down before...

I think "Labour" in that sentance (and the party in general) is redundant- all MPs.

With regards to rigs like your's having excess windage though, I recall seeing another unusual "rig" design (not in the flesh) that consisted of rotating vertical cylinders; utilising an obscure effect. I think maybe the late Peter Blake or someone like him was investigating building a largish vessel using it. But not being aerofoil section, but cylindrical, at rest it would've been subject to seriously high windage.

very interesting designs for junk rig cruisers by Tom MacNaughton in Maine. see www.macnaughtongroup.com/stockplans.htm
His designs seem to challenge the widely held (and fairly well proven) view that the junk rig is best suited to light, narrow and moderate draught. His coin collection even has a number with semi-immersed transomes which, he argues, gives the same effect as lengthening the waterline rather than creating too much drag.
