There have been two cases in which a ship has hit a bridge and the bridge has been found alone to blame.

One was in the United States. The Judge found that the bridge was not showing the proper lights.

The other was in Coleraine and involved a small British chemical tanker. It was one of the better moments of my legal career.

Indeed. I am sure Hoffnung would not have been in rolled-up shirtsleeves when he told the story at the Oxford Union "debate". His death at 34 was a huge loss.

I have just read the Wikipedia page for Gerard Hoffnung. This is the only time that a Wikipedia entry has made me burst out laughing.
