Some brief notes on the Ria Altas in Spain from our recent visit, may be of interest to anyone heading in that direction.

Ribedeo- an easy entrance even at night providing you stick closely to the leading lines which are well marked and lit. The marina is the most expensive one we visited at 28 euros a night for a 9.5 metre boat. Has very good showers and the town, which is up the hill or which can be accessed by a lift from the port, is lovely, with some great bars and restaurants. But with north in the wind a swell enters the ria and at times the marina becomes very uncomfortable indeed. Diesel can be had from a berth at the end of the marina.

Burela- a fishing harbour a short distance south of the large and conspicuous aluminum plant Puerto Alumina. Absolutely no facilities for yachts but a mooring can be had on the unused mooring buoys just off the fishing boat pontoons and the locals seem quite friendly. No charge.
Vivario. Very sheltered marina up a short canalised river at the head of the ria with an anchorage off. Helpful staff but limited facilities and no fuel. 18 euros per night. Filling station 15 min (uphill) but helpful marina staff gave us a lift in her car. Large supermarket mins walk from marina so good for re-victuling. Pleasant small town near marina with good bars and restaurants.

Ortegueria. A real gem. At the head of a rather open ria with a couple of good anchorages either side to suit different conditions. Access to the marina is over a sand bar then up a river estuary which is well marked once the bar is crossed. The approach is through some very beautiful scenery. The marina has recently been dredged and refurbished and there is plenty of depth inside for a 2m draught, but limited shoreside facilities and no fuel. Garage outside town. We were the only yacht in the marina for most of our stay. Sheltered and good security so good for an extended stay. On the FEVE railway so good communications with Coruna (airport) via Ferrol. Very helpful staff. 20 euro per night though a month is 150 euro so it’s a good place to leave the boat for a return trip to the UK. Pretty town with a good range of shops near the marina including ironmongers and supermarkets.
