A new European directive is about to be made a mandatory. Vessels over 10 metre will have to have fitted a reversing "park" beep (like lorries). Regardless of age the vessel will have to "announce" when it is in astern with an audible beep.

Whatever next?

Going to be interesting to see how the eurocrats will enforce it - unless they also introduce some kind of M.O.T for boats.

Can't be too careful, some walking on water politician or Brussels Eurocrat may walk behind you when reversing.

Of course, since the politician is more than likely deaf and blind as befits his profession, I don't see how even a plethora of flashing lights, horns and whistles will help.

Sounds like a load of bolleaux to me. Most boats have better visibility going astern than they do forward. Some may not steer that well, but the "brakes" work better as the prop is designed to give forward propulsion, and doesn't work as well in astern for most people.

So what exactly would be the benefit?

Easy enough (and pretty cheap too)... but what the hell has it got to do with Europe what we do (granted if your visiting them you might be required to play by their rules!)

Nice one. Now reel it in :)

On my boat we already have a beeper to cover up some of the skipper's fruitier language. I quite like the idea of the EU requiring yotties to get the horn :D

So how does this work with the Isle of Wight ferry which by way of being RoRo spends 50% of its journeys going backwards. That constant bleeping will really p**s off the Lymington River Association
