Reverse using Hydrovane rudder

I have a long Keeler that doesn't do well going backwards. I've looked at my HV rudder and thought maybe it's a better option than the boats rudder or both?.
Has anybody tried this.

With a moderate 3/4 length keel ( Vancouver 34) I found the Hydrovane rudder a slight encumbrance but put up with it because decoupling was a pain in the arse. I locked it mid ships.

I used to flick the hydrovane to match the main rudder when maneuvering. Leaving it locked made the boat handle like a dog on lino. It's a micky mouse system compared to a pendulum servo gear.

I’ve used the technique in #3, but generally find manoeuvring astern easier holding the wheel amidships, Hydrovane locked, and steer with the bow thruster that came with the boat. Otherwise, manoeuvring with the Hydrovane locked is a pig. I fully appreciate that you may not have that option!

Having had 3 types of servo-pendulum gear (Navik, Aries - the lift up version - and Monitor) on previous boats I can’t agree with the Micky Mouse comment, but it’s downside is manoeuvring under power.

Previous 3 boats were long keeled so I feel your pain!

Can't agree with the Micky Mouse comment either, going forwards it's a brilliant bit of kit. Going backwards it doesn't make a difference locked in, the stern will still want the wind. Maybe I'll try using it going backwards when I have plenty of room.
