Retrieve Jib Halyard at top of Mast

A wire coat hanger taped or cable tied to the spinnaker halyard along with a downhaul line. Hoist the spinny halyard and use the downhaul to try and move it around to catch the jib halyard. This worked for me on a previous boat when I stupidly hoised the jib halyard with no sail on and no downhaul line.

I was tidying the loose end of the main halyard and started making a very neat flat coil. The coil was becoming larger and larger and without even looking up realised what a complete pratt I'd been. 3 hours later with the aid of the boat hook lashed to the topping lift, the halyard was retrieved. These days I always send the wife up the mast. :)

I've got one of those telescopic things for pruning trees. Some insulating tape on the blades, so it grips instead of cutting?

I have snared lines with stiff wire lashed to a boat hook secured to another halyard. The wire was formed into a tapered hook so was higher than the boathook and above the top of the halyard. The boat hook gives rigidity to the fishing halyard such that by moving the fishing halyard up, down and in and out, you can position tapered hook. The fishing halyard needs to be outside the mast, e.g. burgee halyard, spinikar halyard.

Done something similar although I have a deck house I can stand on to shorten the reach.
I have got totally fed up with my lazy jacks and stack pack.I loose them with regular frequency during the winter so as its getting worn our I am returning to a sail cover and one of those bungee rope sail tidies.

Last time I had this problem (memsahib pulled the wrong one!) I got a guy over from the riggers ... put his wellies on and shinned up the mast ... took about a minute so didn't cost much ... :encouragement:

So back at the Boat today and had a look through binoculars the shackle which was attached to the forestay tho not well has simply ridden up to the top of the forestay.

Think I have a telescopoc pole at home so will try that tomorrow

if you know anyone who is a coarse fisherman (no jokes pls) and uses a pole then he's your saviour. the poles they use are often 10 to 14 meteres long. Hook on the end and there you go. easy.

You might use poles which connect together for cleaning windows with a suitable hook attached if looking for something that's easy to transport if you don't know any fishermen if the telescopic pole needs extending more.
