Is it possible to restrict the performance of a 15hp outboard to make it slower for use by my kids ?

I'm thinking about trying to stop the throttle from opening completely, anyone done this?
Dad needs speed but the kids need slow:cool:

DON'T remove a plug cap or the unburnt fuel will wash the lubrication from the cylinder and will damage both it and the piston.

wind a piece of string around the prop a few times,as i'm sure most boaters know you'll be going nowhere fast.

I will take a look at my Yamaha 15 , its currently sat in the spare lounge with the rib. As its the only boat I've got I thought I'd look after it really well! I'm sure a simple piece of metal on the carb would do the trick.

Would have thought that at the side of the carburetor or near you have a securing point that nips up on the outer throttle cable, or it may sit within a threaded ferule adjuster, the inner cable then protrudes and gets attached to the pivot arm for the throttle?
Turn throttle to max while looking at this area and you should see the arm/lever move with said inner cable attached...
Measure the travel lenght of the inner cable then cut a piece of semi rigid plastic tube with a bore diameter a bit bigger than the inner cable approx half length of the cable travel, slit this tube along its length and then slip this over the exposed inner cable....
This in theory will restrict the throttle movement to half throttle only!
Slip the addition off when Dad wants to become a hooligan again ;)

You could put a sleeve round the actual throttle actuator at the helm and limit the movement, but before letting them loose I would check your insurance. Mine says the boat is only insured with the policyholder on board. This includes 3rd party insurance which is the main reason I have it. (Boat is too old and loved to be replaced if lost).
