I have been delving into my ancestors and have a problem knowing whether I should claim a British title….
Here is the story to date.
I am a 5th generation Aussie.. Both Grand’s x 5 arrived in the First fleet (he on a trumped up charge as he was a master stonemason.. she on a charge that said she held up someone at gunpoint… now I cannot believe that, can you???)
They met on arrival in New South Wales, were sent to Norfolk Island , married , had a dozen children , who kept doing the same till I came along.
Now Grandma x 5, seems to have been the daughter of the High Sheriff of Yorkshire John Gascoigne of Wentworth Castle (John appears to have been a Naval Captain commanding HMS Greyhound)
Grannies problems seem to have stemmed from a dispute within the family. Seems her parents were the originals of a line which merged with the Wentworths, to become the Earls of Strafford.
At the time Granny was born the Strafford’s estates were carved up, Grannies parents inherited the title of High Sheriff of Yorkshire plus the use of Wentworth Castle.
The Earls of Strafford were the cousins of the Marquis of Liverpool, the Duke of Argyle , the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of Cumberland and were Yorkshire Aristocrats ( even had estates in Longford County in Ireland
It all gets confused from here as along come the Vernons, who were a descendant branch of the Wentworths who had estates in Hilton Park, Staffordshire and Droitwych.. Now give a bit of intermarriage by a few cousins and we find that along comes Sir Thomas Watson Wentworth PM of England 1782.
Ok enough of all of this... I just want to know if any of that land or any of the Titles are worth having.. I could come over and claim one or more of them. Can any Pommie BBer give me some advice please?
