Researching the Medway, recommendations needed

It's a bit of a long shot, but does anyone know of any hisotrical publications on the Medway? I've got to write a report on one of the islands, and will be researching the wider history/ cultural heritage of the Medway as part of it.

Also any information on wrecks and other miscellanea would be helpful too.

It's a part of the world I know nothing about, except that I'll have to go for a jaunt around the forts and other fortifications to check sightlines etc (terrible hardship, I know...).

The Subterranea Britannica website has results of a visit to a couple of the forts, Grain Tower and Darnet I think (may have been Hoo). Chatham Historic Dockyard may have some stuff to offer as well. As for wrecks, contact Medway Ports or the HM cos they have to know where they are, especially that rather infamous one at the entrance Rochester Museum will have stuff relating to the relationship between the city and the river.

Outstanding - many thanks to you all regarding this - keep the recommendations flowing! Just to add, I've spoken to the Medway archives people and they have a host of stuff, including navigation plans of the River Medway going back to 1724.

Finally sorted my times out, and will be going down tomorrow morning, for 2 days hunting around the archives and then Hoo Island for old stuff. Many thanks to all who have given me the benefit of their local knowledge. If anyone fancies a sail out of Chatham/ Gillingham Tuesday night and needs a hand, please give me a shout - I'd love to get to know your neck of the woods.

Check out the scuttled WW1 U-boat a short distance from Hoo Creek. Not much left of it now but you can catch a glimpse at low tide.
