Request to IPC / YBW administrator

If it's a question of the number of people viewing bogging the system down, wht not limit access only to people logging on. I often (nearly always actually) poke about the fora without logging on.
Dave

Not sure this'll go down well, but why not outsource running the forum to GarryT, who seems to know how to do it, stick a ybw logo on it, transfer all the members, you remain moderator, and fund it by not paying whoever you are currently paying to not fix this one?

If this forum was a horse, you'd have shot it long ago.

I know this isnt the time to ask but...

To me, a working forum is only half the battle.
The second most important thing for me is a working search.

And what about the content? When I re-read my posts they have seem to have turned from sharp incisive comment to utter rubbish and waffle. What are they going to do about that then?

I don't understand why anyone sticks with this forum considering the performance of the hosting, and secondly the attitude of the YBW team who manage this forum. They clearly do not care about the frustrations we all put up with when the site goes slow/fast/crashes. The site has not improved in the few months I have been logging on despite some promises!! They are quite possibly more interested in the returns for their shareholders than the quality of their services to the customer base!!! I look forward to someone at YBW trying to convince me or anyone else that they do care!!!

When I complained here about the slow and inconsistant service on the forum, I was told by one forumite to "get a life"!! Pleased others are frustrated too....

Nope, not a peep - not really wanting or expecting one really - think he's in the marine industry, so probably hurting a bit at present!

Just lost a rather longer respose to this message which I won't type out again. However, there are queries that take a long time to run and block the forums. Our sys admin team are working on these and hopefully they will crack the final piece of the puzzle soon. I can't put a date on it because we haven't pinned down the problem.

Next year we will move to new forum software but we are waiting for a decision on what will be suitable from the digital department of IPC.

I'm sorry that some think we don't care and are more worried about shareholders, Firstly, no-one cares more than I or is more frustrated about the forum performance than I am - I don't think I've ever concerned myself with shareholders until now!

The forums are my number one concern and I have written the above a number of times but apppreciate that this won'tr have been seen by everyone.

I apologise for the ongoing bad performance of the site and assure you that we are doing everything possible with our resources to fix them.

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks to you Dan for your response, especially on a Sunday evening. It is not my intention to cause you any grief and I do realise that you are genuinely trying to get something sorted. At least you have tried to answer the issues raised. I really hope you crack it soon.

No problem Mr Salt and while I don't enjoy these posts the feedback is always valuable. We've had a response from our sys admin today outlining the problems and what they intend to do in more detail, but not surprisingly their opinion is that we move to new forum software, which is something we've been trying to push for a while now.

Still, the powers that be are now taking the matter seriously (it can be a slow process) and that should happen in the new year. In the meantime I hope the guys can work out a temporay fix to prevent the stuttering performance.

Thanks,
Dan

I can't understand how IPC are happy to have this level of performance under their name. It surely detracts from the image of competence which they would, no doubt, like to project.

I don't think that IPC, especially the forum admins, are exactly happy with the performance. They're probably more frustrated than any user - it's their jobs not their hobby. In their defence performance tuning of databases (which is what's needed) is one of the most sought after and highly paid skills in IT. Moving on to a totally new software package isn't something easily or cheaply done either. The cost of the software itself is only a fraction of the total cost.

Having said that, if no-one complains no-one will do anything and it definitely does reflect very badly on IPC. It becomes harder to overlook things like duplicated tests in their magazines, etc., when you feel that you are no longer being supported.

IPC really do need to get their act together around the whole web thing though - there's a a potentially huge huge revenue stream but the whole site lacks cohesion and the few products they sell are not very well marketed and of poor quality. I know it is very hard to get any money for investment but so much could be done with it.

Re: Request to UPC / YBW administrator

Totally agree

They have been offered some incredible skill sets from forumites, that is very difficult to take up in a commercial set up, even when free.
