Reproofing Olies

Re: Reproofing Oylies

Nikwak products are quite good, will proof fabric against heavy spray etc, but when it comes to sitting on a deck running with water, its time to break out the new oilies you've been keeping for best!

Re: Reproofing Oylies

Slightly off topic but in a similar vein . . .

What's the best way to wash a Henri Loyd Goretex Ocean jacket that's looking a bit grubby?

Have been using Fabsil for years to good effect, just use twice as much as they reckon on wear patches, but be prepared to repeat the application twice a year on old oilies.

Webbie: Dry Cleaning is good, and they will reproof. Take a tissue to wipe the tears away when they hand you the bill.

Re: Reproofing Oylies

I think Nikwax and others do a washing solution. Generally I wash waterproofs in soap, i.e. Lux flakes not washing powder.
Does less damage to pu coated materials.
Leave it to soak in a big tub- I use a stack'n'store box.
Then rinse really well.
Doesn't get the white bits ariel white, but does a fair job and stops it smelling of Portsmouth Harbour and worse!
PS remove mobile phone from pocket first!

Re: Reproofing Oylies

I tried the Nikwax.... it worked in as much as it made the waterproofs bead up water again, but the first good soaking beat them..... took the plunge and bought 4 new sets of oilies for the family (ouch)... only way in the long run....

Re: Reproofing Oylies

NikWax do their Tech Wash- but liquid pure soap or soap flakes ok as well.

I find NikWaxReproofing works on Trax and Henri LLoyd gear ok, (but rinse out machine well before starting the Nikwax cycle to clear detergent)but Gill and some others at cheaper end use a laminate sort of thing which delaminates/ cracks and cannot be reproofed. SWMBO went through 2 Gill jackets in one winter because of that. Shop not amused!
Original style Trax double dosed with Nikwax Polarproof once a year, have done me 10+ years- only once got wet in thru in stair rods rain off Kullivik in 98.
Bought the Gill "biege" midlayer set in Feb at F4 for summer use- heavily (100%)discounted- suspect trouble ahead?

Incidentally, why do SWMBO's buy foulies with light coloured sleeves/ panels/ trizers- then complain they get dirty-is it a genetic thing?
Wots wrong with black, navy blue, deep red with Elfin Satiety retro panels, of course? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Varnish; An absolute must for any self respecting fashion concious Thames Barge skipper to put on his bowler hat since 1912!

What price a genuine black So'wester from Gardiners Naval Outfitters on the old Gardiners Corner (as was) by Whitechapel Library. My first, and still watertight! Breathability a bit nonexistant, hence no hair /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The reproofing product really depends on the kind of fabric you're working on. For breathables a wash in Nikwax Tecwash usually restored the proofing as leakiage is often due to dirt getting into the pores which breaks the surface tension. If this isn't enough I use TX Direct spray. After washing a ten minute tumble in the drier (on moderate heat) is recommended for reactivating the water proofing properties.

The correct way to do this is to wash the clothing so it is absolutely clean and then dry it thoroughly. Steep the clothes in boiling linseed oil for six hours and hang for a week in a warm room , preferably hang in front of the fire, then paint on some of the boiled linseed oil inside and out and let that dry, repeat six times. This takes about three months to make a good job but it's worth it if you want to keep your traditional oilskins waterproof.

Alternatively buy a new set of modern waterproofs.

A late mate of mine, once went to sea in some old leaking oils, they found him still in the cockpit froze and leached white stuck to the tiller. the boat washed up in newfoundland. shame really, i never did tell his his wife i borowed the new oilys shed bought him for his birthday........
